Plenty of people used the word around me growing up, but that doesn't make it any more OK, nor did it ever make me think there was any excuse to use it.

My parents raised me right - sorry if those of you protesting didn't have the same experience.

Paula Deen has been on the outs for a long time. The Food Network is a business and can't fight public opinion.
I believe you. what you know is what many minorities know about racists, that if they'll talk about another group in front of you, they'll talk about your group behind your back.

I don't see the big deal.
She admitted she uses the word(unlike some people) and she made an apology.
She doesn't seem racist,at least that's how I feel.
She is a product of her time.

Seriously, with her being from the south,I would have been more suprised if she didn't say the word.
But yeah, let's trash Paula Deen, but give Lil Wayne a pass.........
The latter is 100,000x more damaging to the black community then the former.

I'm a minority btw.

I also don't think she would have gotten the apartment I have now, based only on the fact she is black. That attitude permeates employers, as well. There may be laws against discrimination, but it happens on a daily basis for many black Americans.

I am on my phone, please forgive the typos.
Sure. Only problem is that, in this case, the characteristic that differentiates one family from the other is race.

Thus, race is used to determine whether usage of a word (in this case, n.gger) is offensive or not. That, in itself is racism. If it is a bad word, you need to condemn everyone for using it and not say that it's okay for people with one skin color but not for others with a different skin color.

After all, it IS skin color that is used to pass this judgment of condemnation:

Me (white person) saying the word: Racist.
My nephew (black person - mixed "race") saying the word: Alright.

The VERY idea of anti-racism is that you CAN NOT pass judgment based on skin color...
