Dems control everything at the state level in California. The GOP can oppose anything, but it doesn't matter. Most of the proposed tax increases were defeated at the ballot by voters, not the GOP.

CA hasn't cut prisons to the bone. And still by law have to spend 40% of revenue on education. And underfunded pensions are a ticking time bomb. The Dems are completely unmotivated to fix it - because they want the votes of public union members.

I live here all my life, and we were bankrupted BY LIBERALS. What planet do you live on?

You think we were lean and mean when Gray Davis was losing $20B taxpayer dollars in the midst of the Enron scandal? Why do you think he was recalled and thrown out????

Do you think we were lean and mean when the liberals were choking EVERYTHING Schwarzenegger tried to accomplish? The liberals refused to work with a Kennedy RINO!!! WE are 11% of the US population, yet 27% of the entire welfare costs.

Lean and mean? Our budget hasn't been slashed. It keeps going up to pay for pet projects while pensions keep growing.

Lean and mean? We've had several major cities file for bankruptcy protection, just as we warned would happen, because they made white whale deals with unions. Now EVERYONE will be screwed because the cash cow died.

The GOP?

We've not had a conservative state in more than 40 years! You are hallucinating if you believe Cali is bankrupt because of the GOP!!! This is proof of just how disconnected some of you people really are!

Blaming the situation in California on the GOP... BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH that's the most disconnected attempt at blame throwing I've ever seen in this dive.

Now THAT'S humorous. A real laugher!

California government's budget has been growing by leaps and bounds for many years, and now they have a debt larger than most sovereign countries. In the last few years, they've knocked a few pennies off, like bailing out the sinking Titanic with a thimble, but the debt continues to grow. They manage to evade their constitution's requirement for a balanced budget each year, by making ridiculous "predictions" of soaring tax revenues that never come true.

The result, inevitably, is soaring debts with no end in sight. Now, as the state starts squeezing taxpayers (including businesses) with more taxes, and more and more businesses leave the state as a result (taking their tax money with them), the situation can only get worse... even as Gov. Moonbeam signs yet another budget filled with those rosy "predictions".
BTW, what's the latest count of hospitals that have closed their doors after years of spending more and more on illegal aliens and others, coming in for medical care they can't pay for? Those hospitals finally ran out of money and couldn't continue.

Last time I checked it was sixty-plus, many of them in California. But that was a few years ago. What is the total now?

In 2005 The state budget was just under 82 billion.
By 2007 it had exploded to over 101billion.

For 2013 it is over 91 billion.

So, when the government explodes spending like that leading into a large financial crisis reverting to prior spending levels is 'slashing" and the correct approach would have been more taxes?

So what other tax do you propose establishing if that happens to pay the bills especially since transport cost are passed on in form of higher price on all goods delivered. Besides new taxes to support roadways needed when it results in less revenue not more as so often happens.

Just like Illinois, also controlled by Democrats.

Illinois is the most Democrat-dominated state in the union, measured by the party’s control over state government and its votes for U.S. Senate and president. The Democrats have controlled the governor’s mansion and both houses of the legislature since January 2003.

Illinois -> Democrats -> Broke

Obama wants gas hikes. Think green energy. As it becomes more expensive to commute people will move closer to the cities and into the cities. As gas prices increase people will be more open to his green energy cars.

We have the solution but Obama continues to stonewall it's progress.

Should help all the poor commuting to work. Food is overated compared to a gas tax.
