California is broke after slashing the budget repeatedly while the GOP opposed new revenue increases. They have cut to the bone and beyond, to the point where essential services are being shut down. They went from lean and mean, to starving and dying, waiting for the deferred decision the GOP punted since 2009.
Only to a liberal would constant increases be considered "slashing" cuts.

It's almost like when the recession hit... the budget almost played out like a textbook......

Revenues decrease from lack of tax revenues due to a down economy, while simultaneously expenditures increase due to an increase in social safety net. It's almost like I have an education on some basic macro economic principles.....

With that demeaning remark said, I am not a fan of CA's budget since there is a chunk that is inflicted by voter "incompetence". CA is still home to biggest tech cluster in the world, along with the biggest venture capitalists in the word, but the world is a constantly changing place.

I thought California was recently touting its success for having a projected budget surplus. They had just raised the state income tax as high as 13% for many residents. Seems like the extra gas tax shouldn't even be needed or they could cut some other tax. I wouldn't hold my breath for that, though.

Notice the OP never came back to the thread after I pointed out that CA increased their budget 20billion in 2 years and then reduced it by 10billion later on when the financial crisis hit?

LOL....that's "slashing" the budget.

Oh yes! Thankfully California will just tax their way out of this pesky problem....especially with regressive taxes like gas and sales taxes which are amongst the highest in the country.

Jerry Brown is in for a rude awakening when the expected $6,000,000,000 in new revenue from the passage of Prop. 30 misses the mark by $5,000,000,000 or so, and ditto for Obama when the expected gusher of new revenue from his beyond-asinine capital gains tax hike turns out to be nonexistent, and will undoubtedly go down from last year.

The state is still broke, the number of people on welfare continues to soar, and the state remains very hostile to new business creation.

Name another state which requires an environmental impact report for public fireworks displays, as the San Diego Union Tribune incredulously reported yesterday?

Evidently the folks in CA like to be taxed their choice. Odd though their choice for Prop 8 was ignored by the Dems.
