Local island town near me [Longboat Key] with only one main road over a bridge is installing license plate reader cameras at both ends of the island. The 'if you're not doing anything wrong, don't worry about them' crowd has no problem with the cameras recording their movements.

License Plate Readers Track You for Profit | Threat Level | Wired.com

quote:
The standards by which the authorities may access the data varies. In the Northern California town of Pittsburg, for example, local police may analyze the database for “any routine patrol operation or criminal investigation,” and “reasonable suspicion or probable cause is not required,” according to the report. In Scarsdale, New York, the barrier for access “is only limited by the officer’s imagination.”

The report also illuminates a network of private companies — many in the repossession business — that scan 50 million license plates a month in major metropolitan areas and sell the data to law enforcement agencies.

No you are traveling on OUR roads. We pay for em. We should be able to drive to and from where we want to go without the government tracking our movements for no reason.

Hopefully the courts rule the same way they did concerning tracking cars with GPS.
except tracking cars with GPS is putting a tracker on a car.

A license plate reader is just using information available to the public.

Public roads are the property of the government of the United States of America. Same thing with air space and national waters.

It's all BS. All these little things continue to add up. Just leave us the hell alone which is what most folks want. Go find some real terrorists or criminals instead of trying to create them with all this BS being hoisted upon the citizens of this country.

Last time I looked.......Car registrations were PUBLIC information. Any body have a secret license plate on their car ? A plate that isn't registered with the state DMV ? Just asking.......

The level of paranoia in the USA is a constant source of wonderment to me.

outside of election day, the people have little say, unless they riot. And even then, the government has prepared to deal with riots.

It isn't just the matter of a reader and public information though. It is the large volume of information being tracked and used who knows how.

I mean if somebody followed you around all day, they would be called a stalker, right?
If somebody had their friends do it, same thing, right? What if they did that and sold the information to be used for any purpose?
In this case this is funded by the people being spied on. The same people don't get a say-so or any proceeds from the use of their information. DMVs sell information too.
Notice many govt agencies and their agents are going after people just putting cameras on officers. Seems hypocritical.
