Why not give them the keys to our homes and grant them the authority to enter at will with that logic?

I should really care that it's ok for a marketeer to know my whereabouts and habits because they paid for the tools from their own pockets.

Now, just imagine if all the insurance companies could have access to information such as the above. It's been my experience with insurance companies that whenever they have to opportunity to raise your rates they do it, but when your situation changes to where you should be paying lower rates they never seem to go back to where they should be.

Just point out one possible consequence to the data being collected and stored.
I believe it was the book "spy chips", but iirc she was discussing this very thing with those electronic discount cards in stores and what was behind that.

FL DMV, for instance sells DMV info all the time. They make around 63 million I believe yearly from this. They are not the only ones though. That state also has documented instances of abuse and potential with information from this agency.

Yet they can't find Chenchnyan terrorists plotting to kill as many Americans as possible in Boston -- even after Russia warned them about them. They can't find any of the 30 million foreigners living here illegally, driving with stolen and expired license plates and paying no taxes on the billions of dollars they make from jobs they're getting with stolen identity documents.

You have engaged them voluntarily and if a private entity has enough complaints to impact their revenue stream negatively, they will stop or go out of business (well unless your beloved government props them up)
Are you really that ignorant to the differences between voluntary interaction vs. coercion and violence?

So the free-market theory goes. Of course, one must be aware of it and be willing to take the time to complain and then that complaint is weighed by corporations, who then decide.

If you don't like police looking at your license plates, you have the ability to start a movement to stop it.

I'm not paranoid, but I don't prefer to live in a society that feels a need to have cameras running all the time.
