That is the point of the show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader."

Education and intelligence are more than simple memorization. You aren't dumber than a kid that just spent weeks memorizing the provinces of Canada if you get surprised on the street and demanded to name the provinces and can't. Anyone that thinks people are less educated now because they can't calculate how many bales of hay fit in a wagon needs to have a mental evaluation or is special needs.
Our current education system is wonderful!

Look at the thousands of fast food workers who went on strike yesterday.

Years ago, the FF industry placed pictures on the cash registers because most of the employees couldn't add or subtract.

Hand a cashier a ten dollar bill and a dime for a bill of five dollars and six cents.....most will have a dear in the headlights look.

Most would have a "dear in the headlights look" if one asked them to write a complete sentence or spell "deer".

Use dear in a complete sentence....."My dear ex-husband had a dear in the headlights look a half second before impact."

Before they are allowed to graduate, I'd rather see all High School kids pass the same citizenship test given to people who want to become American citizens. If they can't pass it, they can't graduate.

Or because huge numbers of fast food workers are immigrants with low levels of education and little or no ability to read\speak english?

Perhaps you should actually read the snopes review you mentioned before you make any more fool of yourself.

What's wrong with knowing geography, having the ability to solve math without a computer, and understanding our the basics of how our government works? Understanding how to find the answer using a computer does not necessarily mean one is intelligent.

You're right, it's totally outrageous that kids these days don't know anything about Aspinwolf and Orinoco. Society as we know it is falling apart.

Anyone who knows anything knows that memorization isn't knowledge. Back in high school I could ace every Spanish vocab quiz you threw at me, but I didn't remember any of the words by the following week. If anything, we should be complaining that our education system is still so focused on meaningless memorization like this quiz.

There's nothing wrong with those things, but they aren't exactly very useful either. When you're doing higher level math, you're better off not wasting time doing every little calculation. I love geography, but its practical applications are few and far between. The basics of our government is fairly important, I'll agree with you there.
