It died when conservatives sold out voters to businesses, and voters cared more about sound bites than performance.
Yet "if" you work it is the paycheck from the business you want. One minute liberals whine about businesses then they are whining about businesses not hiring.
Conservatism hasn't changed. It's still the idea that people have to pull their own weight, help each other, balance their budgets, and not rely on government for the ordinary problems in life.
People have changed, thinking they could get away without it.
You see the result.
People also drifted away from conservatism, when demagogues who wanted to smear it (such as the liberals in this thread), started telling people it was something else, in an attempt to fool them into thinking there was something wrong with conservatism, instead of something wrong with the liberals describing it.

The far right called them RINOs and then began forcing them out or forcing them to pander to the far right just to win elections. Of course the Republicans will blame the liberals and lazy people for destroying their own party.
Anyone who stands left of Attila The Hun's executioner is a liberal to the new conservative, which is rapidly morphing into the New Libertarian.
