Before Cleanup

  • Have people and pets leave the room.
  • Air out the room for 5-10 minutes by opening a window or door to the outdoor environment.
  • Shut off the central forced air heating/air-conditioning system, if you have one.
  • Collect materials needed to clean up broken bulb:
    • stiff paper or cardboard;
    • sticky tape;
    • damp paper towels or disposable wet wipes (for hard surfaces); and
    • a glass jar with a metal lid or a sealable plastic bag.
During Cleanup

  • DO NOT VACUUM. Vacuuming is not recommended unless broken glass remains after all other cleanup steps have been taken. Vacuuming could spread mercury-containing powder or mercury vapor.
  • Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder. Scoop up glass fragments and powder using stiff paper or cardboard. Use sticky tape, such as duct tape, to pick up any remaining small glass fragments and powder. Place the used tape in the glass jar or plastic bag. See the detailed cleanup instructions for more information, and for differences in cleaning up hard surfaces versus carpeting or rugs.
  • Place cleanup materials in a sealable container.
After Cleanup

  • Promptly place all bulb debris and cleanup materials, including vacuum cleaner bags, outdoors in a trash container or protected area until materials can be disposed of. Avoid leaving any bulb fragments or cleanup materials indoors.
  • Next, check with your local government about disposal requirements in your area, because some localities require fluorescent bulbs (broken or unbroken) be taken to a local recycling center. If there is no such requirement in your area, you can dispose of the materials with your household trash.
  • If practical, continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken and leave the heating/air conditioning system shut off for several hours.

Do you have a battery in your car? Do you know there is a safety concern while installing, charging or changing it? How is a battery in your car not like a mercury filled light bulb?

There is a right way and a wrong way to handle the dangerous materials we all live with and use.

Really? You argument here is to compare a once safe technology that could be changed by children without any risk of contamination to that of a car battery that isn't even located within the living quarters of a room? Seriously!!! That is your rebuttal? /facepalm

Who cares? If you're voluntarily working for Glenn Beck, you've pretty much sacrificed your pride anyway.

This is why we have had a rash of acute Mercury poisoning everywhere fluorescent tubes are used, of course.

No. As I stated with the use of the car battery comparrison...we live with dangerous materials and there is a proper way to dispose of them.

I assume you have a home, and there are many dangeous and toxic items in your home, is there not? I also assume you have the knowledge to safely and correctly handle and or dispose of those items?

That is the point you should have derived; not some silly notion of a car battery in you living space.

how many cars do you have? how many times have you replaced the battery in it? How easy was it to exchange the bad battery when you got the good one?

How many lightlbulbs do you have? how many times have you had to change a bad one? How easy is it for you to find the proper place to take your old dead CFL Bulbs?

And I am not talking about the broken ones that fill the air with mercury when the bust. I am just talking about burned out CFLs.

I can count on one hand the number of CFLs I have had to replace in four years. When they burn out, I put them aside until the next time I go to Home Depot, which is the closest store to me that recycles CFLs. It's really not a big deal.

Regardless of your climate change position you have to laugh. But feel bad for his employees.
I would not be caught dead working Beck or even in his office, I feel nothing for anyone stupid enough to work for the hack, besides I would think it would be a requirement that you think just like him to work for him anyone that did not would be a hypocrite for working for the POS.

So did Glenn Beck have a meeting with his employees to explain how he felt about eco friendly bulbs? Bet he got out the chalk board to show all the connections the bulbs have with communism, and he most likely cried. Glenn Beck's lights may be on, but nobody is home!
