No, it clearly does matter; keeping score is harmful to development, which is why Canada and US teams are so terrible.

It would be a bit weird not having score.. but at that age.. no one really cared. Sports were to be active. Real "winning" didn't matter until pre-teen years or so.
People have a bad habit of projecting their own thoughts and desires onto the brains of eight year olds.

I was watching the commercial for the Iphone 5s and they have this song and it goes something like this ...."nuts to the flabby guys, GO you chicken fat GO AWAY" Now as stupid as a song as that is for an Iphone, it's actually a song written for the presidential fitness program commissioned by President Kennedy in the 60's. Can you imagine the Liberal heads that would explode if we played such a song to the fatties in schools today? Why has the world got so politically correct?

This "every-body-gets-a-trophy" attitude isn't doing anyone any good at all. All it does is send the message that success is bad, that doing something better than someone else is unacceptable.
I am all for competition, but rather then tell the "weak kid to get out of the way" sort a speak , a good coach should and will spend extra time with the weak kid to further develop his or her skills.

Glad that's relevant to this thread...

As for the OP's thread, it seems strange, but if there's valid science behind it, so be it. At that age, I'm just happy if the kids are actually DOING anything physical vs. playing video games indoors all day.

Right that's why US soccer teams are terrible. It has nothing to do with most of the US not giving a damn about soccer, not spending anywhere near as much money on it as other countries and the best athletes going into football, baseball, basketball or probably even hockey before soccer.

Then what the hell's the point in trying to score against your opponent? Just send 22 kids out onto a field and tell them to kick a soccer ball around. Oh, and make sure they're all wearing the same color uniform lest the divide themselves into "sides" and actually compete with each other in some way.

I agree with you and I only used the "weak kids" speak because the OP did.

Exactly -- the post you quote being a perfect example.

I played youth soccer starting at age 8. And you better believe the score was important to us. We weren't there just to faff around on a field -- we could have done that anywhere. We were there to try to beat the other team. And it didn't take adults to "push" that competitive drive on us. We already had it; that's why we got involved in organized sports in the first place.

That is correct. Most follow the money. Football and Basketball especially because it means a free education.
