If it was so important to 'prove' Hispanic heritage then ALL contestants should have been required to prove that proof prior to the pageant. But the organizers certainly did not have a problem taking Jamilah McCoy's money in the form of a pageant entry fee.

Very interesting. What is the definition of "Hispanic"?
Hispanic - definition of Hispanic by the Free Online Dictionary, Thesaurus and Encyclopedia.

If the definition means having genetic heritage from Spain, then, yes, she needs to prove that. But, the entry qualifications should have been clearly spelled out.n

If the definition means, coming from a country that is in South America, and speaking the Spanish language, she qualifies.

What I don't like is the ethnic racial bias in this situation, meaning they wanted a certain skin color to represent Miss Hispanic....as racist as wanting a certain skin color for Miss Ameica.

How do you prove that? You can't. And there are many "white" Latinos who don't have Spanish origins.

How sad, although not surprising. The little girl was permitted to compete and won fairly. Proof should have been required from ALL the contestants prior to the pageant if proof is truly an issue. Those parents who complained are pathetic, as are those who run the pageant.

Who knows if proof was not required in the past because it was understood that illegality may have been an issue for some. But now since "la negrita ganó," it is suddenly important...

Being "Black" and "Hispanic" are not mutually exclusive.

I wish more people understood this. Some Cubans, Panamanians, Ecuadorians and Colombians are damn near 100% African - in Colombia's Choco some have even retained their African surnames.

Brings to mind Miss Dominican Republic 2013...mixed but obviously of African descent.

She's beautiful, like most Dominican women.

We've also recently had a Black Miss Puerto Rico, Colombia, Honduras, Peru, Guatemala, and Nicaragua.

There was also some controversy about a recent Miss Haiti who some Haitians thought was too light.

Yep and there were one or two contestants darker than her and this little girl. Some people don't know or don't want to accept just how diverse Latin America really is...

Oh yea, I remember the Miss Haiti...not only was she light but she grew up in the DR. So you already know...
