So welcome to the club. How many millions of math challenged children haven't shed a few tears over some math homework.
Guess the OP didn't read the picture description. The kid had missed a couple of questions that the MOM pointed out and was told to leave them and come back later to figure out. The kid took it upon herself to dig in like a tick and try to find the answer only becoming frustrated and upset in the process.
As a teacher, a mother, and an aunt I can tell you I have witnessed this and it makes me tear up when it happens. You need to read the blurb that goes with this picture to understand that the mother was trying to get the child to stop working on the problem because she was frustrated. Heartbreaking. I'm currently watching the transformation in my niece as she is learning to despise all things school related.
Hopefully our next education reform can be designed by actual teachers and not curriculum sales reps.
I spilled tears over homework until I figured out how the system worked and did as little as I could in the boring things while having a great time playing in science classes.
Common core is a wonderful innovation that will move America forward in education. In states like Arizona, text books are dumbed down and tests are simplified so that the numbers can look better and they can cover for a lack of investment in education. Kids who don't take AP and Honors classes find they lag well behind their peers from "better" states when the get to the next level. It is time that laggards like AZ and Mississippi are forced to offer the same opportunities that students in the best educating states have. AZ kids might have to work harder and think more. OMG! Why cons are against this is beyond me. I guess they want their kids to be as ignorant as they are.
I don't know any kid, especially one so young, that hasn't shed a few tears over a particularly tough homework assignment. I really don't see the story here. Kids have been crying about homework long before the term "Common Core" even existed, I should know, I was one of them.
All it was was a sappy piece of garbage about a kid crying over having to learn something more complicated than counting on her fingers. It is high time we demand performance from our kids and ensure that they can compete with students from other countries. It is a tough, competitive world out there and we are losing our edge. Sorry, while I may feel sympathy for the kids who may have to crack the books to succeed in school, this is an idea whose time has come.
I never cried over homework but I did cry when my parents spanked me for doing poorly on homework...
