Gun owners are the new smokers.
But this would be done by Health Insurance companies not by the Surgeon General.

Here's a quick round up of prior political appointments to SG and some of their positions, when known:

Koop ( Reagan) - Pro Life, anti smoking ( confirmation took 8 months)

Mason (Bush 1) - Member of LDS and promoted church's views on abortion, birth control and homosexuality

Novello (Bush 1)- Rec'd 20 count indictment

Whitney ( Clinton)- A veterinarian and acting SG, between appointments

Elders ( Clinton)- Pro legalizing drugs

Manley ( Clinton)- Acting SG, between appointments

Satcha ( Clinton) -Advocate for Single Payer healthcare

Moritsugu ( Bush 2)- Acting SG between appointments

Carmona ( Bush 2)- Physician and Police Officer was highly critical of Bush Admin for suppressing scientific information

Galson ( Bush2)- HINI Vaccine

Weaver ( Obama) Acting SG between appointments

Benjamin ( Obama) Pro choice

Lushniak ( Obama) Acting SG between appointments

It does not appear that SG's position on the issues made a difference, one way or another.

The NRA was amongst the first to seize on the current nomination.

Every administrative appointment must toe the ideology and political agenda of der vorsitzende, being competent and knowledgeable is a distant concern.

And your opinion is what? That criminal defendants do not deserve a vigorous defense?

You know, there are a lot of countries where that is true. For at least the last 230 or so years, ours has not been one of them.

Doctors are dealing with a population of sick people. That might have something to do with it.
