"They can't make that movie today because everybody's so politically correct. You know, the NAACP would stop a great movie that would do such a great service to black people because of the N-word," says Brooks. "You've got to really examine these things and see what's right and what's wrong. Politically correct is absolutely wrong. Because it inhibits the freedom of thought. I'm so lucky that they weren't so strong then and that the people that let things happen on the screen weren't so powerful then. I was very lucky." Mel Brooks
Is that REALLY true?!! What about Django? That had a very liberal use of the n word and gratuitous violence. Brooks is getting a little senile to really believe what he's saying.
They decided the word today was just too controversial and negative in meaning, at that they didn't want the dogs name controversy to overshadow the film.
The original film is still shown on TV here without editing, as the dogs name at the time had more to do with the latin meaning of the word than as a derogatory racist term.
In Sweden we have a pastry that is now days called Chocolate Balls. They used to be called "neger bollar" maybe 30 years ago. They are very easy to make and so tasty. We also became PC, which I can understand, and the name was changed, No problem.
This is from a Swedish kids/family movie from the early 90's where you can see the PC kicking in.
