In Nevada they allow you to delay installation, but not to fully opt out. This woman wanted her SmartMeter removed, which they installed without her permission. They refused, so she had it removed herself, and installed an analog. They showed up on her property with guns. Read her story.
On August 6th, at about 10:30am, three men from Nevada Energy, armed with guns, arrived unannounced on her property, removed the analog meter from the socket, took her analog meter as well as the unauthorized smart meter she had removed, and left her living without electricity. One of the men identified himself as an investigator with the company and said that he was investigating her for “criminal tampering.”
She was in tears, visibly shaken by the encounter, and recalls asking the men, “Why are you on my property with guns?” Their response: “this is procedure Ma’am.” (If this has become the “procedure” then we need to act to stop this kind of utility intimidation and abuse.)
More than a month later, the lights are still off and Mona hasn’t budged. “They’re not putting that thing back on my house,” she says.
In Austin the utility company is turning off people's AC during certain times of the day.
On guy on the Austin forum said he came home and the house was 89 degrees and his AC was off.

This is the CA hearings. Notice the corporate BS. Luckily, the reps call them on their BS. Seriously this hearing is bizarre. Gotta watch it. The PG&E rep won't even tell them who they can talk with. No names of any kind.
I had a greenPower adapter on my AC that I was talked into from my electric company. I was having problems with my AC and I removed it myself. This was to shut off my AC during high electricity usage times. I haven't heard a word from them, I took it off 2 years ago.

Uh, how does the smart meter control the A/C? Here in Cali, the smart meter is plugged into the line going into the house, before the breaker box (and beyond that, how would a smart meter know which breaker is the A/C?).

The one I had installs between your AC unit and the power going to it. It has a thermostat that you plug into a wall outlet near your real thermostat and the meter transmits back to the EC via wireless. That's how mine worked.

They have smart meters and "free" smart thermostats. One talks to the other I assume.
