  • Three recessions in the 1950s.
  • Tripling of privately held debt in the 1950s.
  • Domestic violence against females was rarely prosecuted and wasn't even called domestic violence until the 1970s
  • Jim Crow laws were still in effect in much of the Southeast until 1965
  • Until 1962, sodomy (the crime homosexuals were persecuted under) was a felony in every state in the US
  • The "Red Menace" scare was in full effect, and all manner of innocent people had their lives destroyed over Communist paranoia
  • The Cold War was at its peak, including the Korean War, Cuban Missile Crisis, etc.
  • The top marginal rate was never below 80%
  • Long distance was ~$12.50 per minute (in 2014 constant dollars) for the first 3 minutes.
I can keep going, but basically, if you weren't an affluent white heterosexual WASP, 1946-1964 wasn't all that the myths and legends would have you believe. I'll take 2014 and all its problems, TYVM.

I disagree with such. I would rather continue into the future. High risk of polio exposure, severe racial discrimination(Emmett Till, Bombingham, Jim Crow laws), no internet.

Maybe for you. For some of us, those years were some horrible years. I'll gladly take today and the future.

Continue in to the future, of course.

I suspect those who want to live in the past, also want to live in Singapore because the streets are free of chewing gum.

46-64. I was born in 57 so it would only put me roughly 10 years behind the present. I am a white heterosexual male and according to the opinions posted here it would be ideal for me. Cars were cool and the majority of inner cites were not the hell holes they are now.

Food was better and cheaper, I don't drink or smoke so my chances of living longer are greater.

I never met Jim Crow so I don't care about him.

Have fun in the future.

The desirability of that period in America to an individual would depend upon whether they are white and heterosexual. Few blacks and gays (and no gay African-Americans) would choose to return to that period. It was a great time to be straight and white - but not so great if one was not both.
Or a woman

(merely half the world population, I know )

No, and why should we? But there are lots of non-Blacks who blame all Blacks for the actions of other Blacks.

I also find it funny you hate that period more than slavery.
The Black murder rate is around 17 murders per 100,000. I looked up some data from the CDC. It only listed white and nonwhite. However, the nonwhite murder rate in 1950 was 28 murders per 100,000 and 25 murders per 100,000 in 1953. I would suspect the Black murder rate would be highest than that. In short, the Black murder rate was most likely higher back then than it is today.

"Angry black man rant?"

I know. We're supposed to do a little dance for you, show our teeth and maybe even offer you a shoeshine.

And? I'm sure it was the golden age for lots of places. Why would i care about that? I care about my civil/constitutional rights. Not how many cars Chrysler is pumping out.

Besides, i'm from Arizona.

Yep. I'm sure people in 1800 were already talking about how the country was going to hell in a handbasket.

Same old spiel. Everyone thinks yesteryear was better than the present time. Total bull.
The "angry Black man rant" comment, I can sum it up like this. You offered facts, proving that 1946-1965 would have been a horrible time for Blacks. It can't be refuted, and because of a disagreement, one responds to it by making an accusation of "angry Black man".

I pay it no mind. Some folks aren't happy unless black folks are shucking and jiving.

Wanna call me angry or militant? Fine. I'll be that.
