For Asian Americans, a changing landscape on college admissions - LA Times

Lee's next slide shows three columns of numbers from a Princeton University study that tried to measure how race and ethnicity affect admissions by using SAT scores as a benchmark. It uses the term “bonus” to describe how many extra SAT points an applicant's race is worth. She points to the first column.

African Americans received a “bonus” of 230 points, Lee says.

She points to the second column.

“Hispanics received a bonus of 185 points.”

The last column draws gasps.

Asian Americans, Lee says, are penalized by 50 points — in other words, they had to do that much better to win admission.

“Do Asians need higher test scores? Is it harder for Asians to get into college? The answer is yes,” Lee says.

Looks like if Princeton requires a 1500 SAT to get into the school you only need a 1270 if you're black but need a 1550 if you're asian.

Honestly it's no secrets Asians are scored at a different level than other minorities.

It just sickens me that in 2015. The word "diversity" and "equality" are used by liberals. Liberals sacrifice "equality" of the academic selection process in the name of diversity.

Either all people are treated equal or they are not. Can't have it both wAys.

And African Americans are far over represented in sports involving scholarships. Yet no one says anything about that. They say African Americans earned those scholarships. Yet an Asian is penalized in some liberal way to make it look like it's legit wAy of discrimination.

Anyone that wants go to college can go to college.

Bottom line. There is no God given right to get into the school of your choice.

Furthermore, college admissions is discriminatory by nature. That's the point of having an admissions department.

Otherwise, if you're just taking the highest scores in order until you reach your incoming class limit, there'd be no need for an admissions department.

Just one reason we have falling further behind; not promoting our brightest.

I don't think only the brightest should have a shot. They should base you admission on what type of student you are, how hard you work, how engaged you are. Some kids can get an 4.0 and barely study at all. They are just born "smart". Other kids have to put in hours of hard work in order to get a good grade. I wish there was a way to determine admission based on other things than just a score on a piece of paper.
