Man wielding machete shot at New Orleans airport. Should TSA agents carry guns? - CSMonitor.com

Not only no, but hell no. Is there any government agency staffed by less competent people than the TSA and now they want to be armed?

Quote:
Following the shooting at LAX, Mr. Cox (president of the American Federation of Government Employees,) insisted that TSA officers need guns and law enforcement status.

“Only an armed law enforcement unit within TSA can ensure the constant and consistent presence of sufficient law enforcement resources needed in the immediate area of the checkpoints and other key locations in order to prevent another tragedy like the one that occurred at LAX,” he told Politico at the time.
Do we really need another armed government agency? Is adding poorly trained armed government employees going to do anything but get even more law abiding citizens shot? Not likely.

Some believe every man, woman and child should be armed with no restrictions.

Why exclude TSA from the mix?

Well here I'm going to play devil's advocate.

Why is it that the existence of the TSA is premised upon people and their luggage being inspected for being illegal or carrying terror related items but they are the only LEO's so-to-speak, put in that position NOT being armed?

You got your border patrol sometimes hundreds of miles from your borders armed to the teeth, but seemingly with only the mandate of maintaining border security by eliminating the crossing of either of illegal persons or items.

Seems oxymoronic to provide ultimate authority and weapons to those charged with border incursions by either, people you're giving amnesty to in any case, or drugs of which your own citizens have created the market for, but at the same time those folks coming into direct contact with EVERY entity who might be either an illegal person or one with criminal intent, are not armed.

A head scratcher.

TSA gate agents are low paid McWorkers. They given simple repetitive tasks and have no authority to use judgement - unlike El Al agents who are trained to ask questions and size people up. The taxpayers, gov't, and airlines won't pay them enough for the additional responsibility of carrying a gun or to train them. TSA gate agents at our local airport are "on call" and called in for a 2-3 hour shift in the morning then go unpaid until a 2-3 hours shift in the evening.

Note that the trained county sheriff officer shot a TSA agent while aiming at the suspect.

no they do not.

but if you read government regulations concerning employees carrying firearms while in the course of their duties, you would see that all are allowed to do so already. not just the ones that should, but all.

who in the hell needs to be armed in the department of education or the bureau of wights and measurements? none of them, but they are allowed to be so armed.

"Should TSA agents carry guns?" NO but someone close by should have the means to stop an idiot like that machette guy. Give them pepper spray or tasers. Just in case they need a bit more than a plastic tote to defend themselves.

Airports are crowded and we don't need somebody who is barely trained in the heat of the moment spraying bullets.

very true, after all, we already have the police who are barely trained in the use of firearms and their use already of spraying and praying.
