The much touted Paul Krugman vs Stephen Moore economic debate touched on welfare and possible changes.
Unfortunately, most haven't seen the whole debate as Paul Krugman pulled his big wig contract out and blocked televising the debate at the last moment. It sounds like it may have been a wise move as Stephen Moore seems to have gotten the better of him, although Paul Krugman made some good points too. Moore touched on some Krugman's flip flops on economic positions and alluded to the fact that Krugman's flip flops coincided with whether or not a D or an R was doing it. I think that is why Krugman perhaps didn't allow it to be aired.
On the welfare part of the debate Krugman argued that an expanded social safety net would decrease poverty and for a higher minimum wage. Moore argued against minimum wage or at least a lower minimum wage for teenagers, and he argued that the bottom 20% can't work their way out of poverty if they aren't working.
Interesting stuff. There are some cell phone videos from audience members on youtube.

Democracy works until half the people realize they can vote themselves the other half's stuff.
We are working ourselves to that tipping point.
Except that your vote, despite of making a lot less than a lot of Americans, should count just as much. No? Or, do you think a weighted vote be given a consideration? Regardless of incomes, or wealth, you have a right to vote and elect the government to represent you. Remember: no taxation without representation. Do you suggest that those you believe shouldn't vote, have everything tax free?
Most folk end up on welfare because they engage in unprotected sex and for a variety of reasons do not take financial responsibility for the consequences.
We could start by not allowing new births to qualify for any incremental assistance. In 18 years, the US would be completely out of the child welfare business.
When you complain about even the idea of the poor receiving charity, you might want to think about the end result.
Seriously, they're not going to suddenly get MORE jobs, or become adults, or suddenly say "OMG no more welfare, I AM CURED!" And hop out of their wheel chair.
