Come Nov 1 Hawaiian's take a vote on their future?

Quote:
On Nov. 1, a 30-day voting period will open to more than 100,000 Hawaiians certified by the state-sanctioned Native Hawaiian Roll Commission to elect delegates who will represent them in Honolulu this winter at an eight-week constitutional convention for self-governance. More than 200 Hawaiians on the mainland and across the islands are campaigning for 40 seats at the planned assembly, where the paramount task will be to draft a document that guides the creation of a new government by and for Native Hawaiians.

Native Hawaiians are the only indigenous group in the U.S. without their own political structure.

I was lucky enough to be stationed on Oahu for three years. If the U.S. had not have stolen it from the native islanders I would have likely never gotten the chance. That island is covered in military bases. The larger question is, what does Hawaii expect to get from all of this? What would a "new government" accomplish? How would it differ from what exists?

How would it differ... thats a really good question.

Well for starters, the Hawaiian's will have control over their lands. as you point out the islands are coverd with military bases and the supporting housing. Pearl Harbor was a very productive food source for the islands, today If you ate from the bay you risking your life as much of the marie life is hazardous.

Pohakuloa, on the Big Island, the US is using D.U. how will they clean that up? The impositions the Hawaiians face by the US military is saddening for the the welfare of the native hawaiian.

I am glad you pointed it it was stolen...

Right now they want to build a 30 meter telescope on the mountain... against all the laws that say they can't or not suppose to... By having our Hawaii back we stop the further desecration of the island.

Hawaiian's were a thriving people, their resources was they land and water on which they lived. That was enough to sustain the population.

The US came to change the rules.. and the players to benefit them. The rules of the game were that of the Hawaiian Kingdom. This is the way in wich the US operates across the world.

So does this mean that they will secede from the union and be their own nation?

great question.... under the US laws, Hawaii was never lawfully ceded, thus the illegal overthrow. The Kingdom of Hawaii not once never never never gave up its sovereignty.

At the end of the day it's still one man one vote and Hawaiian residents would vote for the status quo. Hawaii will not become a native dominated Kingdom.
The constitutional convention and planned assembly have no authority or legitimacy to do anything - and definitely not your ultimate wet dream of kicking out the American occupiers and restoring Hawaii to it's pristine condition in the 1800s.

Hawaii: If they're serious about leaving the US; then WE have the right to put everything back to how things were in, what, 1898? Tho I don't think the few people left there would like the idea of no cell service, cars, roads, air conditioning and so on.
