I'm surprised it's not quite a bit higher with the way the media has fawned over him and excused his mishaps, and the fact that he has a cult following who still spends a significant amount of time shilling for him.
I think when you hit 50% you're easily out of cult status. I think any of the remaining Republican primary candidates are firmly in the cult status range.
No, the cult following still exists, as does a mostly complicit media who hasn't been doing their job for eight years.
While I won't pretend he didn't make some significant mistakes -esp during his first 2 years- I think history will view Obama favorably. Since perception is relative, he looks especially competent compared to the doofus he replaced. By every objective measure, we're much better off than we were 8 years ago, so he's been a major improvement over W.
He codified everything GWB did and more, while blaming him for his own mistake . To say Obama is better is entirely ignorant of the facts. He is exactly the same thing with a different letter.
As presidents go, he's actually been pretty good. Pulled the economy out of a tailspin and at least hasn't wrecked it (hasn't really fixed the fundamental problems, though), at least moved healthcare in a partially correct direction, inked some important international deals including with Iran, started a path to stopping the idiocy with Cuba, killed a lot of terrorist leaders, made some important moves on climate change. Lots of shortcomings and far from "perfect", but this is reality we're talking about.
Conservatives who want guns falling from the sky like manna and prefer lots of uninsured people will of course bemoan all of this, but the fact is that he has actually accomplished A LOT. Undeniably. He will go down as one of the most consequential presidents of the last quarter century at least. Right up there with Reagan. And all that with a large Republican contingent that refused to work with him out of principle.
Not bad... Will be interesting to see Trump accomplish a fraction of his outrageous "I'll just dictate like a CEO" promises if he ever gets into that seat.
I guess it was bound to happen. A pragmatic, moderate president that has managed to guide America out of a deep economic crisis, keep us out of stupid "preemptive wars", not too mention has been relatively scandal free and has accomplished much even though congress has agressively attempted to obstruct him at every turn, should and is receiving high approval ratings in his last year in office.
Seems to me that the Republican controlled Congress could have done something about that, did they?
