It is up to ESPN to do as they desire. The person is "free" to say stuff but that doesnt mean there can not be implications, especially in the setting when it is at a public venue or public social media account (even if it is his own). He is seen as a representative of ESPN as a major sports analysts and whether he likes it or not ESPN sees him in that light and a talking point of the company. Free speech to me says you can say as you want....but also there can be implications for said speech. Smart people know when not to talk about things and when to do so. SM is not a place for that. In your private home fine.
Tolerance and freedom of speech- as long as you are a PC liberal. Otherwise, shut up!
Or so long as you're the Dixie Chicks whose careers were nearly destroyed by right wing extremists here in the US for expressing their disgust with GW Bush. Funny how the wingers forget that...
Everyone likes some sport or other. "Everyone" includes gays, trannies, Muslims, men, women, girls, boys, liberals, conservatives, geniuses and idiots.
ESPN does sports. Only sports. A little something for everyone.
Shilling was hired to talk about baseball, something he does very well. Baseball is America's game, and it's played everywhere there's an American.
With his gratitous and hateful comments, he was costing his boss a hell of a lot of money and loss of network affection. ESPN does not do political talk. That's not their thing. If Shilling didn't have enough self control to do the job he was being very well paid to do, he should have been fired.
ESPN gave him a break with the 3-week suspension, something any rational person would take as a serious warning to knock off the hate speech, but he didn't have the self control. So, naturally, ESPN fired a guy who couldn't represent them or himself in the way the job required.
If I had been the CEO, I would have fired him just as fast. The guy was just as unfit to be on camera as a junkie or a drunk.
exactly....he was hired to discuss in public baseball.... his personal opinions about other topics are his own but should be done over a public SM account where your employer can see it. He had been warned several times before....
I personally dont believe anyone has the "freedom" to talk about anything, anyone how they want in a public forum or public venue. Freedom of speech comes with it responsibility.

This is a perfect example of how speech in America isn't really free. In reality, speech can be very costly.
DOH! The last time I looked, ESPN wasn't part of the federal or any state or local government!!!
Quote:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

ESPN can do as they please in this manner.
Exactly. As can ESPNs customers. If they chose to cancel their service over ESPNs bigoted, excessive actions, so be it.
