You are completely wrong about me. I am 57 years old and I do know the history behind those words. But I chose to look forward and not dwell on the past. To study history is to learn from our collective mistakes AND never repeat them. And why would I want to ruin my awesome and happy life by thinking negative thoughts about ignorant people using derogatory names?
I was called a g**k by a white trash male who was road-raging on my white boyfriend. And called a J*p by a driver whose SUV couldn't stay within his lane on a curvy road. Anyway, they were losers and not worth hating on.
As to African-Americans who object to being called the N-word, despite the fact that they use the term all of the time themselves, well I think it a very stupid control issue on their part. And just because they demand that non-blacks not say the N-word out loud, they will never be able to prevent others from using it in their thoughts. Blacks are the ones giving the N-word the negative power. If they just didn't care, then the N-word would become useless. It also would help their cause if they stopped glorifying black gangsta/rap culture and speaking in ebonics and wearing pants falling off their asses.
Well, I'm about your age, too, and I have a positive outlook on life, I don't dwell on those words either. However, I don't support using those words or dismissing them so cavalierly as you do. And yes, folks who use racial epithets to denigrate others are losers, I agree.
Part of self-empowerment is about insisting what you are to be called and identified as a certain person or belonging to a group. That's why it's important to me, and I hope you will respect that. Which is why I don't have a lot of patience with reactionary white people who get all bent out of shape and think things are PC and insist on being archaic. They don't appreciate being told things have to change and they resent it.
I don't care how they feel, and I tell them they're wrong. And I'm happy and cool with that.
You'll have to take the issue up with African Americans on the N-word - and as I've mentioned, opinions vary in their community on that. I doubt that your stereotypical red herring remark about young gangsta raps is gonna win too much favor with them.
Noting wrong with that, plus that is an outdated, stupid term to use to describe someone. Oriental rug or an object is absolutely fine, but to call someone that term is just wrong. It's not like the N word, which is slang but still just outdated.
Like I said guess they will have to drop "Oriental" from thousands of restaurants if its such a derogatory term then

^^^ This is YOU being all self-empowered and trying to control other people...

So how about you developing some strong self-esteem and not caring about what others think of you?

Those who have such a huge problem with the law should write those who sponsored it, particularly the 51 members of the Congressional Asian-Pacific American Caucus.

The bill, which was sponsored by Congresswoman Grace Meng (D-NY), was passed by the House of Representatives unanimously on Feb. 29 and again by the Senate on May 9. It was co-sponsored by 76 members of Congress, including all 51 members of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus.
Sen. Mazie K. Hirono (D-HI), who sponsored the bill in the Senate, said in a statement that she was "proud to have seen this effort through."

probably the same people who still refer to blacks as colored or negros these are the same folks who're clueless about why so many find the slavers flag insulting.
Far too many conservatives can't detect the difference between not being pc and being asshats...

Oh puh-leez. I don't control other people. If they want to be archaic and old fashioned, let them. But the difference is that they'll get push back. You think the civil rights movement succeeded out of silence?
And actually, IMO, part of self-esteem is to speak up and say your piece instead of staying silent and being afraid of being called "PC". That works for me.
Look I hear you about being strategic. But reclaiming power also requires action. You think LGBT people getting equal rights requires staying silent and just observing?
