"California is one of the few states in the country, and easily the largest, where Democrats are completely in control, holding every statewide office as well as overwhelming majorities in the Assembly and the Senate, not to mention both United States Senate seats. Mr. Brown and his party are using that power to try to enact legislation — on guns, tobacco, the environment, the minimum wage and immigrant rights — that suggest the kind of agenda that has eluded national Democrats."
"The Democrats’ more recent success in the state is in part the result of good fortune. California has been going through a period of prosperity, and in recent years Mr. Brown has been spared the need to impose politically contentious spending cuts."
I am just curious how conservatives who rail against all things Democrat, from stifling economic activity to stifling our very way of life, our freedoms, our hopes and dreams, just how do they reconcile the fact that California continues to do fairly well as compared to most states in most ways, now expected to outpace the economic growth of the country looking forward.
Better as well compared to even most countries of which there are less than 10 in the world with bigger economies...
How is it possible that California didn't come apart economically, morally and in every other way possible long ago? The disaster Republicans are always so concerned about when it comes to all things Democrat should have ended all forms of prosperity in California long ago, right?
You give up many freedoms to live in California. Is it really that prosperous, it was broke under Swartznegger?
And the NYTimes is a Democratic leaning newspaper, of course they will paint things rosy.
Well, if you insist that's the case, I'm certainly not going to ask you to elaborate or anything.
I have a lot of relatives in California, one who runs a construction company. Some of the stupid regulations he must abide by, make no sense at all. And gun laws, zoning, codes, too many stupid restrictions.
The rest of the nation is not California. In New York, for example, statewide offices are held by Democrats. The state senate, however, has been republican for most of the recent past, and will stay that way unless upstate population decline reaches the point where they can no longer control that chamber. Even upstate democrats recognize the importance of leaving the state senate republican, lest NYC area democrats take complete control of state government. When it comes to state government, there can be a good reason to spliticket.
