You'll never know I was carrying it in the first place.
Where I live, it is illegal to carry a firearm unless you have a CCW. That essentially means unless you are a politician, judge, or cop you are not carrying legally which basically ensures that only thugs will be carrying and they aren't really trust worthy.

Unless you know, or know of that individual, how can you trust them on anything much less a gun?
as former military, you ought to know all about the constitution and its importance.

I'm a historian by trade, so yeah, I'm familiar with the concept of civilian militias raised to protect the local settlements in lieu of a standing army. Why do you bring that up?
And it is my business, because having armed people around who are of doubtful trustworthiness is a problem.
