Over the past eight years, the religious right has been painted as an aging, dying breed that is on its way out. In a sense, that has been true, but I think the left has vastly underestimated them and their prominence.
A few things during the Obama years stirred up the hornets nest that is today's religious right. First, the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" The second is the supreme court decision to legalize gay marriage. The third was Obama lighting the White House with rainbow colors the night of the marriage decision and lastly (and the big one), Obama's instruction to allow public schools to let transgender students use the bathroom of their choice.
These events have awakened what is an aging, sleeping giant and it's likely we are headed into another "Moral Majority" era like the 1980s. These people want a quasi-dictatorship in which the Federal government is a strong arm of the Southern Baptist church. They don't believe in separation of church and state and believe the First Amendment only applies to Christianity as defined by them. Left unopposed, we very much could be headed towards a society like the one in the movie "V for Vendetta." One of the hallmarks of that society I can definitely see happening in this country is heavy censorship of the media and a national curfew as well as banning of certain genres of literature.
It's a scary time to live in this country if you support freedom for all and value separation of church and state.
"They" are actually much more of a minority than you realize.
I think that's what is causing so much paranoia (from both sides). People have this image that the extremes from both sides are what the candidate is all about.
If you think the religious right was the driving factor here you are being naive. I'd suggest reading this local article from my area that will give you snapshot of those that voted for Obama and flipped for Trump.
On Tuesday, she did something she never would have imagined: she voted for a Republican.
Woodrosky, 53, enthusiastically cast her ballot for Donald Trump, the first time she ever backed a GOP candidate for president.
There are many out there like her.
Trump defeated former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton 58 percent to 39 percent in Luzerne County, where Democrats have a nearly two-to-one registration advantage. Trump garnered 78,303 votes compared to 52,092 for Clinton, a rout that helped deliver Pennsylvania and the presidency to the billionaire businessman.

Do you have statistics on how Christians voted? According to what I saw, it was the same as it has been the past several decades. Nine million registered Christians chose to not vote, which is also not unusual.

Trump got fewer votes than McCain or Romney.
He received 300K fewer votes than a widely unpopular competitor.
Before any talk of "sweeping" anything, "mandate" or "hornets nest" anything...or anything having to do with this election period, people need to look at a little bit of statistical reality. There is nothing exciting about the numbers of this election on paper. The only change is that White midwestern states had low Democrat turnout and MAYBE a few thousand people who switched from Obama to Trump. That's it. All of this over a relatively small shift.
Trump won the white house fair and square, and lets see if he puts forth an agenda that leads to him winning again. An assertion of a new surge of Christian Religious fanatics influencing this election does not appear to be accurate.

It may have more to do with what Obama didn't do or even try to do. That list is much longer but with a busy golf schedule there is only so much time to do the job he was hired to do.
Fortunately we have someone going into the job that appears to enjoy working, who is less interested in vacations and golf outings.

It isn't a new surge of Christian fanatics. It's the same old faces we've had to deal with since the '80s, but now they have extra zeal because they are angry.
Sorry to burst your bubble but it is much simpler than that. Obamacare destroyed the middle class & when the premiums for 2017 were released, Hillary lost elections that day. Church attendance has been declining over the years whereas 'unity' places of worship that welcome all faiths have been on the rise so its not at all dramatic as you described in your post. You cannot preach to a hungry crowd. All our first world problems were replaced by third world corruption, violence, poverty & unemployment. Fake polls & made up statistics dont fool us. We voted for Trump because we were caught in a downward spiral for the past 8yrs so we chose to get out of an abuse relationship with the democrats & save ourselves. A lot of us here voted for democrats but we couldnt afford another expensive democrat president so we cut our losses & voted for an affordable Trump presidency.
