They are also a key distribution point for shipping over seas as well.
Most people think CA is some power house due to policy, but it really is as you say, just many fortunate things help boost it and when you account for such, you find CA isn't doing that well. The fact that having such powerful advantages and yet the state still has faced bankruptcy shows you how mismanaged it really is. You have to be a pretty poor manager to cause the economic power of that state to falter. If anything, CA should be a glowing beacon of how NOT to run a state.
It is sad really, I grew up there and it is really a beautiful place to live anywhere in the state (especially far north in the mountains and coast), but its policies have destroyed its major cities and that poor policy has bled out into the smaller towns as well leaving them devastated by taxes, regulations, overpriced housing and numerous draconian polices that disregard the liberty of the individual.
By the way, if you want to avoid CA politics when you come to Texas, do your homework on some of the cities, some are min-CA type hell holes and we have had a ton of NY and CA people move in who are progressives escaping their previous states only to look at repeating their same failed policies here.
Progressives are like viruses. After they destroy the host, the only way to survive is to infect a new host.

So why are the richest places in the country progressive areas? People whine about housing costs but that is a function of high demand and high wages. Could it be that as people get more educated, they feel the need to no longer be controlled by puppets of the donor class and demand that politicians actually serve the people and their interests?
That's right -- CA and other blue states got a lot brag about, while Trumpland red states got rust belt.
CA alone has an economy bigger than the UK's, with tech industry hotbed Silicon Valley home of Apple and Google, Hollywood ... similar state WA got Boeing, Microsoft ... all are in vibrant knowledge based global competitive industries. Talking about knowledge, NE corner blue states with MA and others are the home Ivy League, Nobel Laureates...
The blue states can easily say they are already great with demographics and industry of tomorrow, while Trumpland rust belt needs to be great again.

Income inequality that rival 3rd world countries.
Wealth gaps divided mainly on racial lines, shrinking middle class, rising poverty levels...sounds like a real liberal paradise.
13 of the top 20 cities with the highest unemployment are in CA alone. If you drive from one end of CA to the other, you will see the real CA. It's no better than anywhere else really.
It was Arnold Schwarzenegger who almost bankrupted CA (Republican) and it is Gerry Brown (Democrat) who is saving it.
Oh, and anyone can find things they don't like about any state if that's what they are looking for.
Apparently anybody can find things they like about a state.
But you can't post a puff piece, then claim that's proof some political philosophy is superior.
California, with its high taxes, high wages and tough regulations, has the No. 1 economy in the U.S., while two states in Trumpland (Texas and Kansas) with low taxes, low wages and few regulations are struggling.
California, the illegal alien capital of the United States, with the highest poverty level and most money dished out in welfare benefits. I don't need to say much more.
Ronal Reagan said if Columbus landed in California the east coast would still be a wilderness.
CA has such natural advantages that is can overcome almost any level of mismanagement. And its biggest advantage, the one that makes CA possible, the one that wouldn't exist with the current management, is the Hoover Dam. Take that away and CA is Nevada with a coast.
