At least in Chicago when the Dems passed this they admitted they were concerned about the health of residents...and added it would help Cook County financially. They expect to get almost $75 million next year from the sugary beverage tax, but really, it's more of a concern over health....and not the fundraiser it appears to be.

Depends. NYC has some ridiculous amount of taxes on cigarettes. The revenue has declined significantly as the tax has increased and it isn't because people stopped smoking. They simply stopped buying them there.

Black market cigs are thriving. If I were to buy my pack of cigarettes in Philly it would be over $11.

And you think the sugar industry is fighting the tax because they don't want to make more money?

I think it's you that doesn't get it. The sugar industry used the US government to deny sound research into the health effects of unfettered sugar consumption decades ago.

They abused the people's trust in the US government and FDA to make more money. At least people that smoke these days have a pretty good chance of understanding the health effects of tobacco use should they continue to use them. Unfortunately a lot of people still think sugar isn't bad so long as you expend more calories than you take in.

I hear it's $12 in Chicago. The only thing bigger than the taxes are the potholes.

That is a lot of money for something that is a waste of money and quite a disgusting addiction. Could you imagine what you could do with an extra $4-5K a year.

It is better than diabetes promoting. It would do Americans a lot of good if they all gave up drinking sugary drinks. They would all probably lose a good portion of their waist size.

Don't give them any ideas.

Was watching this on tonights news and they said sales were way down. They showed a 2 liter bottle of soda which sold for $1.35 but the beverage tax was $1.57 + the sales tax. They filmed one guy walking out waving his sales receipt saying he just returned his purchase after realizing he paid more in taxes than the actual product. They also said that a lot people are going outside of Philly and buying their products now to avoid paying these ridiculous tax. I love how libs blame everyone else for losing this election then turn around and pull a bone head move like this. And they still can't figure out why jobs are coming back now that Trumps going to be President.

All true but we don't need big brother telling us what we can eat/drink.
