Taxes on tobacco are ridiculous everywhere but more so in some places, as NYC.

I am guessing the tax is for the city budget, which is what a city tax is usually for. Not really that big of a deal, and if someone wants to buy sugary drinks in Philly, then they will simply have to pay for the tax, it is just like a tax on tobacco and a tax on alcohol. The world still continues on, and if that tax gets someone to rethink buying a sugary drink just because of a tax, then that is a bonus.

This post makes no sense, I for one am also fine with a tax on alcohol and also drink alcohol. I am sure there are plenty of liberals that are in favor of a sugary drink tax that will still continue to drink sugary drinks. Though it would be good if all Americans, liberal and conservative drank less sugary drinks.

Should we make food stamps so they can only be used for healthy foods and disallow there use for sodas, chips, cookies, ice cream, etc?

I doubt you will get answer on that.

However I would agree with this measure.

Oh, I remember the uproar when it was proposed that the welfare debit cards couldn't be used at liquor stores, casinos and strip clubs.

Yeah. Foodstamps should be limited to sustenance items.

They's just increase the amount on EBT cards so they can still buy them. The tax money will go the the public employee unions.

I haven't read the whole thread yet, maybe someone already brought this up but, today it's sweet drinks and tomorrow, what? Any sugar bearing foods? That'll take about 75% of all foods off the shelf.

When will politicians realize that this is not a fat/skinny problem, but a culture problem?

These same drinks are sold in plenty of other countries, yet they don't have the same obesity problems we have here in the US.

Poor people are usually fat because it costs less to buy prepackaged preserved food than it does fresh vegetables and healthy items. How much does a box of rice-a-roni and a pound of cheap beef cost? A few dollars maybe, but certainly a lot less than fish with couscous and a freshly made salad.

I've been saying this for a long time but obviously lawmakers don't have a back bone. The whole purpose of food stamps is so low income people have access to good nutritious food. Junk food like chips, soda, cookies and so on certainly do not qualify as such. Anything that has almost no nutritional value should not be purchased with food stamps. It's not rocket science.
