Capitalistic paradise? That is a yes, particularly when we speak about the crony capitalism.
As for Putin "being a true man of the people" - remove the word "true" here, since he is a part of oligarchy, but for the most part he is widely supported by general population for the reasons I mentioned above.
I hear The Twilight Zone theme here not because Russians like Putin, but because so many American conservatives like him.

Then Stalin destroyed US/Soviet relations with his adherence to Communism, imperialism, and abysmal human rights record.

Reagan famously ended the Cold War when reformist Mikhail Gorbechev promoted Perestroika and Glasnost.

Putin and George W. were friendly and Putin supported our anti-terrorism efforts after 9/11.

Hillary presented a 'reset button' in 2009.

From personal experience, I speak to Russians often via Amateur Radio and visit with them at IT conferences - they LOVE the united states... they are not our enemy.

So tell me liberals - why all of a sudden do we hate the Russians again? They no longer oppress their people, they embrace and encourage capitalism, and generally fight alongside us whenever major conflicts break out.

is this just an example of "the friend of my enemy (Trump) is my enemy"?
America used to be friends with Russia. America is the bastard child of the British Empire. British where sworn enemies of the Russian people for the past three centuries. During the US Civil War, Russian naval ships were stationed outside of NYC to protect it from British ships. Britain did want to capture America if the Civil War went in favor of the Confederacy. Especially since Lincoln and company owed Britain billions of dollars in loans which were borrowed from British investment banks on Wall Street. What changed? Britain America started to get close in World War 1. Also you have to remember the USA invaded the Soviet Union and captured Vladivostok after World War 1. When Russia became Communist, America could no longer be friends with Russia because Russia went against anything that was against the Anglo Capitalist system America fought along side the King in World War 1 and secured victory for all of the Anglo Saxon race. World War 2, Britain was back broken, and can no longer be the watchman of the world. Bretton Woods was signed, Former British bases became American bases, World Bank and IMF came into being, and the rest his history. America is the harbor of British Anglo position and in charge of the global world order that it inherited from the British. America is still the harbor and defender of the Anglo Saxon world order if you like it or not. Donald Trump wants to upend that order.

Also the Russian position has not changed in the past three hundred years either. Russia fears expansionism on its frontiers. After the fall of the Mongol Empire, Russian race will never forget what happened and thus have remained on the defensive ever since. Like the Chinese, the Russians have a defensive mindset, while America like Britain and Spain have an offensive mindset. Russia fears encroachment. Russia conquered Central Asia, the very area where the Mongols invaded from. The Turks tried to encroach Russia, as well as the Persians. This allowed Russia to expand in the Ukraine which was Turkish controlled, and Caucuses which was Persian and Turkish controlled. Than you have Napoleon who expanded his Empire from far west as Spain, to far East as the City of Moscow. Napoleon invasion ended up with disaster due to his supply lines being to far. Even World War 1 Germany were having issues fighting the Russians, but Germany got lucky thanks to Lenin. Than came World War 2 with Nazis back stabbing their Soviet Allies and invading the Soviet Union. Soviets expelled the Nazis, and drove the Nazis to Berlin conquering all of Eastern and Central Europe. Russian Empire, Russian Republic, Soviet Union and the Russian Federation are all the same when it comes protecting their realm. They don't like encroachment and depend on buffer satellite states.

In order to maintain princely relations with Russian state. America under Donald Trump, must remove bases in the following bases in Japan, South Korea, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Romania, Turkey, Canada and so on. These bases have striking distance to Russia. America must reject itself as the premier bastion of Anglo Saxonism, and instead just being solitude American. Again America can be friends with Russia, but America has to give up its Empire. With Donald Trump at the helm in a few days, this is a very likely scenario.

And Last, Prussia is different. Prussia is a region of Germany, and has nothing to do with Russia.

Yah. But the UN has no troops of its own, it relies upon the member states to furnish the muscle. & the US is the biggest, baddest military on the block. We spend more on military than the next 15 or so top countries combined. So who's gonna bell the cat?

CIS PM KGB Lt. Col. Putin, with 16 years in the organs. & do those guys ever retire? Short of a 9mm Makarov to the nape of the neck? Yah, I'm sure CIS has plenty of cutouts for their friendly hackers & black hats. The Russians (& Romanians) & other clients love putting out disinformation (a Soviet invention? The word, not the concept.), poisoning their political enemies with exotic chemicals - just to kinda drive home the point, as it were.

But sure, please do put your future in hack to these wanna-be Masters of the Universe. They have even less notion of what they'd do with the speeding car if they caught it than your average pit bull does.

Being a "friend" of a foreign country is not a policy, you need to develop common goals and work towards that end.

Why can't we be 'friends' with Russia?

Probably for the same reason why you shouldn't try to "French kiss" a cobra! Things may not turn out too well!

Greek politics are a mess, so it would be useful if you gave us a name. Lucas Papademos? He was approved by the Greek parliament, perfectly legal. Parliamentary systems can change governments without an election.

The only difference between Putin and our state is the two term limit, which Russia does not dutifully follow.
Seriously? The beaten-up journalists, closed polling companies, the occasional dead opposition politician and state-funded media operations are just little peccadilloes?

Putin does of course have the leverage the incumbent.
If by "leverage" you mean he still runs things, yes.

If he became unpopular , then we would know the real nature of his regime. His fate is very much tied to the Russian self interest so.....
So he's rattling sabers and pointing out external enemies, telling the Russians how their brethren are suffering as minorities. Gee, what does that resemble?
