The people of those states know that all of those jobs may not be coming back. What they wanted (and what they have in President Trump), however, is someone who will at least fight for them. They knew they wouldn't get such a fighter with Hillary, who proudly boasted that she would put coal miners out of work.

Trump said it will. Trump wouldn't lie to his supporters would he?

I'm afraid Trump was a little short on details when he talked to the ex-coal miners. He gave them the information they wanted, not the information that they should have, namely that they will have to re-train if they want a job in this century. It was all a smokescreen, and unfortunately fooled many unsuspecting people. Shame on him.

Another broken promise in the making.
If that's true then we will see Republicans win even more as Democrats and Republicans who are affected by that will keep blaming Hilliary and Obama!

Thanks for the reminder!

Coal is dying. It is where horse power or whale oil was at the turn of the mid to late 19th century. Even then I am sure there were those who lamented the decline and the loss of jobs. But time moves on.

Coal use is in decline all over the world not only in this country but around the world. It is obviously still being utilized but the world is making the transition because of the waste, soot and smog coal generates in addition to the greenhouse gases. Fighting global warming will only accelerate in the near future as its effects become more pronounced and the costs associated with it rise.

It is a political charlatan or con man who preys on the hopes and fears of coal country for political expediency. Rather than offering miners programs to adjust to the changing realities he gives them false hope and meaningless promises.

Worthless is too kind a word for this kind of fraud.

It's a nine day wonder why people vote against their own interests. Contrarians? Just so they could "stick it to the liberals"? When you get right down to it, we are seeing the power of right wing populist propaganda. People are gullible.

This is a RWNJ lie.

Clinton pointed out the future did not look good for coal mining and advocated for retraining options for unemployed miners.

"Stick it to the liberals," the joy at drinking "liberal tears," ... ahh, the pleasure to be found in sticking it those who have been fighting for civil rights, workers' rights, abiding by the Constitution, taking care of the less fortunate, being responsible guardians of our natural resources, ...

The liberals/progressives have even done a better job at managing the money. The last Republican President to the leave our nation in better economic shape than he found it was Eisenhower. Given his opinion of the military-industrial complex as well his support of the interstate highway infrastructure project, Eisenhower would fit in the Democratic liberal/progressive camp these days, so I don't know how far back you'd have to go back to find an actual Republican/conservative President who left the country in better economic shape.

Reagan and his rich-guy tax cuts tripled the national debt.

Bush inherited a budget surplus, and left the financials in a shambles.

As long as Republicans/conservatives continue to spread lies, people will continue to believe them.

It is a lie that giving tax cuts to the rich spurs economic growth. It's demand that grows the economy, not supply. We've tried it several times now and never work once. Yet the GOP hammers on it like tent revival preachers.

Pulling out of the Paris Climate Accords because you don't believe climate research is still not going to change reality. Even if you pull all the research off government sites, reality is still going to keep happening.

Coal is not coming back. No more coal-fired power plants are being built and many are shutting down. Even China's backing off. West Virginia's remaining mountain tops are saved by the bell. Solar is cheaper and more are employed in solar energy than coal these days and no reason to suspect that trend will not continue.

I wonder if this preference for believing in self-serving fantasies is why there is such an affinity between the religious right and conservatives.
