What's happening in America is that both our left and our right are being co-opted by socialist and fascist ideologies at the far end of the spectrums.
First off as a movement the Alt-Right isn't advocating for genocide. They want the deportation and "peaceful ethnic cleansing" of all racial minorities to form a white ethnostate. It doesn't make it any less horrendous but nonetheless I'm trying to be fair. Same with far left groups that while they don't call for genocide they call for the expropriation of capital away from a class of owners. The former believes in doing away with a "parasitic" class of people they think are a drain to society while the latter wants to do away with a class they view a parasitic that's holding down the vast majority of working people.
It's the same battle from pre-WWII Europe. One is a class struggle, the other is a struggle of nation/race. The classic Nazi vs Communist/Anarchist fights.
The Nazi's original plan was deportation also. We all know how that turned out.

I prefer to discuss individual issues rather than over-arching ideologies. Any "label" I might use for ease emerges from my views on individual issues, rather than my views emerging from any label or package deal.
I used to think that the Alt-Right meant a hip new conservative movement that stood up to political correctness and Social Justice Warrior-ism, but boy was I wrong. A co-worker of mine who I assumed was conservative pretty much revealed to me he was Alt-Right. Thinking that it meant "cool, hip" conservative, I wrote down some of the youtube channels he recommended. OMG, this guy is nuts! The Alt-Right are essentially a collection of watered down Neo-Nazis, and white nationalists who want an ethno-state for white people. They peddle Race/IQ pseudo-science and think that anyone who doesn't agree with them is under the spell of the Jews.
Most aren't even conservative at all, they admit this much in their videos and actually openly deride the conservatives. They talk ill of Christianity as much as Islam and think that the white race didn't need Judeo-Christian values and could've been just as triumphant with their ancient Nordic/Germanic and Greek mythologies.
Why aren't conservatives more openly denouncing this group that's infiltrated the conservative movement? They're essentially a white identiarian traditionalist group that bares no resemblance to actual American conservatism. I tried to at least find some common ground with him by saying that I could see a case for cultural assimilation to preserve western values somewhat but even this was too much for him as he thinks you cannot separate race from culture.
This is the right wing's version of SJWs/Commies/Anarchists and Antifa.
Isn't this a crazy time we are living in? History repeats itself. We are seeing pre-WWII like clashes between Communists (AntiFa) and Nazis (Alt-Right).

Good point, but that was after the fact. We know now what their true intentions were. I don't want to ascribe intentions on the Alt-Right that they themselves are not making. But you don't need to look further than how inane a "peaceful ethnic cleansing" really sounds.

Scarabchuck, we were discussing the Alt-Right ideals and their small overlap over conservative ones. I asked you if you ascribed to XYZ Alt-Right ideal. If you do then you're probably Alt-Right, if not then you're probably not. It's that simple. Why did you make a big fuss about it?
My theory on the overlap between Alt-Right and conservatives stems from the reaction to globalization and the faction of the GOP that was Buchanan-ite taking the helm under Donald Trump. It isn't that Pat Buchanan and Trump are Alt-Right but they're more populist and represent the Hamiltonian branch of the GOP. They talk about the border, the need for some protectionism, and such. Alt-Right people see this as a step in the right direction for their utterly anti-American and un-Constitutional creation of a white ethnostate. So they're latching on to a faction of the GOP and riding it's coattails.
They're manipulating people to their side and blurring the lines between national interests and racial interests.
If you need an alternative to the right that is further to the right then, yes, that is damn scary.
