Thanks for the find ! I must say it's interesting that rural crime groups in the United States seem to be mainly based in the South .

Rural crime in south probably accelerated after the Civil War. With a broken economy and less capable or respected law enforcement, some were driven or attracted to theft. Prohibition provided another jolt.

Chicago mob was big in Missouri. Certainly big towns and rural areas likely too especially for making and hiding illegal booze.

Another example http://www.americanmafia.com/Cities/Omaha.html
Centered around a city but unlikely limited to it.

Johnson City TN was at one time known as Little Chicago for bootlegging and probably more.

Some South Dakota reservations have organized, violent gangs.

Is your interest academic, literary, personal curiosity or what?

There is often "courthouse" / white collar criminal rings that acquire / use influence to get government jobs & contracts that are not as obvious.

I'm actually thinking about making a documentary series about contemporary rural organized crime groups the world over .

While googling for you I found references to rural organized crime in Sweden, Thailand and elsewhere. Just google it 10-100 ways. Also use Google Scholar.

If you decide to make such a documentary, recognize the risk and think EVERY question and move through. I wouldn't do it alone. Even if people talk they might change their mind or people they know might not like it.
