The Washington Post reported that the email was actually sent on Sept. 14, the day after WikiLeaks publicly released those same files online.

That would suggest that the sender may have simply been pointing the Trump campaign to publicly available documents, rather than providing them with early access to information that could offer them an advantage. CNN has not yet updated its original story.
