So you are saying that higher minimum wages lead to innovation and productivity growth, the backbone of economic growth?

Its a compelling theory you are implying. But unemployment rates are ultra low in California now, so both productivity growth and employment growth is happening at the same time.

Its a shame that the politicians are using the minimum wage discussion as a way to get more support every few years though, by refusing to fix the minimum wage to economic growth. Instead they let the value of the minimum wage erode every year which is in essence deliberate wage theft.

Minimum wage is $12 in LA for large employers, not $15 for another few years. Hopefully the self checkout will make it more efficient. I haven't been to a Wal-Mart in several years (none near me), and maybe all aren't as poorly run as the one I used to live near, but they almost never had enough people working registers. Lines were always long, even when there weren't many people there, as they'd only have 2 or 3 registers open.

Correction: A higher minimum wage will force companies to find innovative solutions to reduce labor cost by implementing automation and reduce number of employees. An “artificially mandated” minimum wage will only reduce number of employees.

The unemployment is ultra low due to the right economic policy implemented by President Trump despise the kicking & screaming of the Democrats every step of the way.

We are witnessing how the free market theory, when implemented correctly, have a profound effect on the economy, even in the Socialist California economy.

Automation is not a function of rising minimum wage ... it would occur regardless. There is no aspect of business that company managements would like to eliminate more than their workforce. It's been true since machines were first invented ... there's no stopping the march. Humans are just too damn unpredictable, contrary, untrustworthy, unstable, distractable, opportunistic, self-absorbed, avaricious, etc ... bless our little hearts ... Managers and entrepreneurs don't want anything to do with us except as consumers.

True, companies will do what they can to save every penny. That's why we gotta future proof our society. Otherwise if you think the homeless issue is bad now? Just wait..

Company management always face a choice: to spend high initial investment for automation versus maintaining the current workforce that maybe less expensive initially than put up the high cost for automation. In making that decision, they look at when is the cost of automation will break even compared with labor cost.

A rise in labor cost will just make investing in automation that much more attractive with a faster return-on-investment. It just makes the management decision easier to make.

Wouldn’t it nice if companies do not need to make a profit so they can hire as many people as possible and pay everyone a livable wage with automatic increases every year?

Wait, we already have that. It’s called the CALIFORNIA STATE GOVERNMENT!!

Actually minimum wage is $0. Not sure why that's so hard for people to comprehend.
