It isn't "failure to do the same". The FBI received a report that Cruz intended or had made reference to, committing an act of terror, which is in the jurisdiction of the FBI. They received TWO reports of this nature.

The State of Florida, or any local law enforcement agency, did NOT receive these warnings.

The FBI failed.

Rick Scott is the last person I would take advice from in this regard.

The kids face alone had the look of evil that should have been a red flag right there .

That seems to be what Rick Scott expected the FBI to do.

OTOH, his own social services dropped the ball. As did local police, who had many contacts with Cruz in recent years. The kid gave off all kinds of warning signals. But, as you said, we don't lock people up because they show the potential for a crime spree.

Today's laws make it almost impossible to confine the mentally ill against their will. Even if the FBI had investigated Cruz I do not know under what law they could have confined him or restricted him from using a gun. Remember the law says that a person must be ADJUDICATED mentally ill to remove the right to own a gun. Cruz was essentially an orphan, his mother died a few months ago. Who would have initiated the court action?
It will be interesting to see what went on in the alleged 39 times local LEO went to his home. I think this Sheriff's department has a lot to answer for.

I also don't think its true he hadn't violated any law. While not yet confirmed, its been reported he assaulted a fellow student, that he tortured animals, was shooting in a tiny suburban back yard. Pretty sure those are all crimes.

He also made terroristic threats. One of his neighbors was on TV today saying he bashed his car in with a golf club. Also reported he punched holes in the wall of his mother's home and while that may not be a crime, hard to believe there weren't threats to the mother/brother accompanying that level of violence.

Seems there were plenty of times this kid violated law and should have been arrested.

The FBI failed for sure, bigtime. But, local LEO has a lot to answer for as well imo as well as the FL Dept that was called re his mental health when he cut himself.

Local authorities were only called to his home over what sounded like domestic disturbances. The FBI was alerted to his specific threats of this kid saying he wanted to do exactly what he ended up doing, and that information was never shared with local law enforcement. Who knows what they could have or should have done, but lets hope there are some lessons learned from this.

This is what the FBI would have been up against.
