The article states that he tried that approach in the past but ended up losing too much business.
Most chinese buffet's I've been to have always required payment up front.
Can't blame them.
Once I went with my rich cousin and our kids; she refused to get a meal but kept having her daughter get her more and more of those cream-cheese/seafood filled things ~ and she was presented with a bill when we left.
She was shocked and the rest of us were laughing our buts off. That's why they should just charge up front.
Either make them all pay up front, or don't make them all pay up front.
No excuses.
But you gotta admit, that restaurant manager has balls, "you people steal?" Jeezus.
Protests and more widespread animosity against asians by blacks for sure (an scuffle a while ago in a beauty salon supply store between a black woman customer and an asian store clerk, caused blacks to boycott and preach hatred against asian owned stores in states hundreds of miles away that had no ties whatsoever).
It has nothing to do with having balls. It is just that he is not handicapped by political correctness that have pervaded the rest of our society. It takes someone who probably is ignorant (which is not necessarily a bad thing) of the widespread PC culture (that you cannot offend black people whatsoever) to show us that.
This has nothing to do with their race. It has everything to do with their culture.
I'm part Asian, grew up with Asians and have lived in predominantly Asian communities all my life. Most of my friends and relationships were with either Chinese, Vietnamese, or Koreans.
I think very few are truly racist. What I have seen are mostly cases of recent immigrants having no experience living among non-Asians and being fearful based on stereotypes they've seen on the media. Like my boyfriend's parents warning us not to go to a certain "black neighbourhood" for a concert because they genuinely were afraid we'd get shot.
It doesn't make judging people by color okay, but it seems to be done out of personal safety concerns rather than actual malice.
That's why the immigrants' kids tend to be much more accepting of diversity. They grow up here and realize that racism is unwarranted, because most people of all colors are just trying to peacefully go about their lives.
He could have meant college kids. Not unusual for any college kid to try and get a free meal.
The group most likely to dine and dash would be students. He clearly stated if he didn’t know someone he would have them pre-pay as well as saying that if a table full of diners were all on separate checks and ran, even if he could catch one he wouldn’t be able to get them to pay for the entire table. Of course, calling the Chinese owner racist probably would pay more in a lawsuit.

Why can't the owner decide who to sell to and under what terms?

Anything less is slavery.
Stop throwing that term around like damn confetti. Slaves are people who don't get paid for their work, and no one is asking this guy to work for free.

Slavery is the confiscation of the fruits of your labor at gunpoint by a third party...no matter the percentage.
It's his food, his property, his business...either that or no one can own anything...including their own bodies.

He chose to go into that business. He set the prices. He has the ability to charge people before or after they eat, but asking that he treat all customers equally unless they have actually harmed him is not confiscating anything.
I'm sorry, but to imply he is being robbed at gunpoint makes you sound like a serious drama queen.
