No man is an island. Our hypothetical entrepreneur benefits from one of the finest educational systems in the world. He learned his skills at publicly funded schools and colleges. If a working class person with big dreams had to pay private tuition to learn vital skills, it's much less likely that she'll pull that off. Same goes for the highly trained workforce that she needs to hire to run her electronic wizardry factory. Skilled workers trained in public schools and vo-tech programs are a wonderful resource for the companies who need employees with know-how. What about transporting those wizardry widgets from factory to market? Our entrepreneur benefits from the US tax payer funded Interstate system which extends to almost every town over a certain size in this country. If the widget factory had to pay to build its own private road system, its share holders would go through the roof. You can give many more examples, I'm sure.

The wealthy benefit from living in our democracy with all its benefits funded via our taxes. Why shouldn't those who have benefited the most pay a little more in taxes? That's only fair play.
I am very well off. I fully own a PA-31t aircraft and may upgrade to a Cessna Model 510.

So why do I have to pay more so deadbeat welfare teat suckers can have flat screen TVs?

Roads aren't built by the government.

Is it every citizen's duty to put some money in the pot so we can spend more on the military than every other nation on earth combined?

I have prepared thousands of tax returns and my observation is the overwhelming majority of taxpayers at all levels of income feel they are paying too much. It isn't just the rich.

Nope, I'm definitely better off, and the rates are graduated to where my take home pay is still higher the more I earn than it was when I earned less

Are you in a low or high tax bracket?

The turbo prop Cheyenne is a REALLY nice airplane, but the Mustang is on another level. Nice!!! I like the Citation because they can get in, and OUT of some relatively short fields.

Ah, the "fair share" argument. Do you want me to argue against it on the basis of finances or morals? I can do either.

Financial: If it was every citizen's duty to contribute, we wouldn't have a large portion of the nation paying $0 and/or getting a tax "refund" that they didn't actually earn.

Moral: If the government is engaging in activities that you find morally reprehensible (i.e. you are a pacifist and the government is dedicated to a program of civilian bombing in countries that never attacked us in any way, shape, or form) is it morally acceptable that the government forces you to give them money to finance those reprehensible behaviors?

What we should have, if we want everyone to pay "their fair share," is a system that deducts the exact same percentage from everyone's income. The rich still pay more in $$, but everyone pays the same in % of income.

On the moral side of the argument, the only thing we can do is stop electing "leaders" that are interested in empire expansion and globalization - and enact term limits to ensure our elected representatives are forced out before the swamp that is Washington corrupts them. We have a two-term limit for POTUS, we should have the same for Senators and Representatives.

How is it “greedy and selfish” to spend money one has earned?

Seems to me the greedy and selfish are the ones who don’t think people should be allowed to do so.
