The SOTU will be much more enjoyable without the Democrats present anyway. Maybe Pelosi and Chuckie can give their response from Mexico City among their constituents.
and maybe Trump can give his SOTU speech in front of his masters.....from the Kremlin !
The Constitution of the United States; Article II, Section 3:
"He shall from time to time give to the Congress Information of the State of the Union, and recommend to their Consideration such Measures as he shall judge necessary and expedient; he may, on extraordinary Occasions, convene both Houses, or either of them, and in Case of Disagreement between them, with Respect to the Time of Adjournment, he may adjourn them to such Time as he shall think proper;..."
THAT is the requirement in the Constitution regarding the State Of The Union address. That is the only thing that has any force of law or Constitutional requirement. "Traditions" established by former Chief Executives have no force of law, and can be eliminated any time.
The President has the power to call them into session, jointly or individually, and can tell them to adjourn and go home!
It is amazing what can be found in the Constitution, if one will simply sit down and read it.
It doesn't say convene them in a certain place. The President can do it someplace besides the House of Representatives, which the Speaker of the House controls.
The Democrats usually end up regretting the precedents they set.
If this sets a precedent it amy not be that bad in the grand scheme of things. You seriously have to question the idea of having nearly everyone from Congress, SCOTUS, most of the cabinet, military heads and multiple other heads of major agencies all in one place.

I actually agree with you on this. It strikes me as really dangerous.
Well, if the precedent is that when a president shuts down the government in a snit, he doesn't get to address the nation from the halls of Congress, I'm good with that.
As I recall prior to Christmas we had a bill that passed the House, would have been signed by the President if it were not for the Democrat minority in the Senate. Things have now changed slightly but you still have majority of the Senate and the administration that supports this measure. The Democrats are still in the minority on this one.
Elliot I'm sure you are ecstatic but a lot of Americans are going to look at this as extremely childish and petty on Pelosi's part. She will not go unscathed. At last she dropped the bogus security concerns, I'll give her credit for that.
Trump's poll numbers are tanking badly. He's taking the blame for the shutdown, and why not?
He specifically asked Americans to blame him. And we're obliging him.
This Is Nancy Pelosi’s Finest Hour The House speaker is making a fool of Trump and proving her Democratic skeptics wrong.

What are you talking about? The bill passed the Senate unanimously--meaning all the Democrats were onboard--and Trump was ready to sign it, until Coulter and Limbaugh weighed in. Stop trying to rewrite history.

You recall incorrectly. There was a bill with unanimous Senate support ready for Trump's signature. The Hannity and Coulter called him a wuss, the GOP lost the House, and suddenly McConnell wouldn't put any bill to a vote that didn't carry Trump's stamp of approval.
