It hasn't worked since the 19th century. Losers of the vote have been elevated to the WH on several occasions dating back to the post Civil War era. And it's happened with 2 of the last three presidents, who were selected, not elected.

NYC, and L.A. should NOT dictate to the entire U.S. The Electoral College was put in place, and has remained for our entire existence as a Constitutional Republic. There is a good reason it is there, and if people want to get rid of it, they should move to amend the Constitution. The Constitution has been amended many times before. If enough people want it changed it can be changed legally.

He made no secret of his disdain for manipulated voting blocks. He was a yuuuuuge proponent of the "popular vote". But, that was of course, back when he was whining about how the deck was stacked against him.
How can changes so far reaching as this be passed without a ballot referendum? The same for some of the R ideas as well. Seems like a whim by a small group who just happen to be in the majority.
The idea is Constitutional, and no, such thing would not lead to the country to break apart. As a matter of fact, the country is now more broken and divided than it has ever been thanks to the idiot in the WH.

The left is very slowly destroying this country. It's like boiling a lobster. At first, the lobster notices nothing. The lobster of course, being John and Jane Q Public, busy living their lives, at the malls, buying their kids sneakers with lights in them.
Eventually the Supreme Court is going to have to step in here, otherwise you're correct -- the country will break apart.
SCOTUS can't step in. This entirely States rights.
I can see the country breaking up if we lose the EC. Before that, I would never say that.
At this point, that would probably be best.
It's time for a Constitutional Convention to amend so we can vote on a break up.
