Trump on Monday said he could impose tariffs “much higher than 25%” on $300 billion in Chinese goods if Xi doesn’t meet him at the upcoming Group of 20 summit in Japan. China’s foreign ministry -- which usually refuses to provide details of meetings until the very last minute -- declined Tuesday to say whether the meeting would take place.
The brinkmanship puts Xi -- China’s strongest leader in decades -- in perhaps the toughest spot of his six-year presidency. If Xi caves to Trump’s threats, he risks looking weak at home. If he declines the meeting, he must accept the economic costs that come with Trump possibly extending the trade conflict through the 2020 presidential elections.
“Whether they meet or not, none of the possible scenarios are good for President Xi or the economy in the long run,” said Zhang Jian, an associate professor at Peking University. “You don’t have a good choice which can meet the needs of the Chinese economy or Mr. Xi’s political calculations.”

Trump seems to think Americans have such deep pockets that they can afford any kind of tax hikes, but he is wrong. His tax hikes are putting Americans in a hard place.
Xi will ignore trump, guaranteed. The Chinese public is already being prepped for a long trade war, just as the American public is already getting brainwashed by all the negative China news.

Trumps comment is nothing short of idiotic.
Perhaps you haven't been listening to the tax hikes the left has planned !!!
Everyone of the democrat clowns running for President champion tax hikes far greater and none of it would be to reset US China trade !!!
Its like someone complaining about a pebble in one shoe when they have a 1,000 pound bolder pinning their other leg to the ground !!!
Everyone and their brother knows that Trump and Xi are going to meet at the G20. No one should be shocked if there is some kind of deal struck between Trump and Xi and there will be other agreements made with other countries. There is a wide range of subjects open for discussion with Trump in the mix with tariffs, threats of tariffs. sanctions, threat of sanctions.
It will be interesting to see how this shakes out I am hoping for China to open up its market for U S made goods and both countries agree to low tariffs. Sanctions is another issue that will be discussed heavily, and trump will be the center since he has imposed sanctions and made threats to sanction other countries if they trade with sanctioned countries. It looks like the world is getting divided up between the sanctioned and the unsanctioned and I do not think that is good.

Let's revisit this comment after the G20.
Xi, and China as a whole, are not anywhere near as tough as they posture themselves to be. What cracks me up is that there are so many people around the world who fall for it.
Yeah, that's one illustration of why Trump is a bad negotiator.
He's so focused on being a bully that it's hard for him to understand that part of being a good negotiator is letting others save face.
I don't like trump but honestly this is basically the only way to deal with the current Chinese administration. China will view any concession not as such, but as a victory and a sign of weakness, and will treat it accordingly. Trump is a bully, for sure, but read up on Xi's rise and power grab, and think long and hard about whether it's a good idea to let him "save face."

He'll eventually let him "save face" but only after it has sunk in to Xi that it is not a sure thing. So next time Trump offers a compromise, Xi won't think he can just dismiss it and expect a better compromise later.

Do you seriously think the trade situation would be different if China was the most democratic country in the world? Be honest, you cant possibly believe that. For the elites who set foreign policy, what matters is not democracy, but obedience. If China doesnt cave they show they are disobedient to the American ruling class. Thats the problem.
