And just to get this out of the way - the Bible does not support mistreatment of any kind, and I have in mind America's slave history - because I assume that argument would be coming. However, it does acknowledge slavery existed - and it gave guidelines on how both parties were to treat each other.
What a load of crap.
"Anyone who beats their male or female slave with a rod must be punished if the slave dies as a direct result, 21 but they are not to be punished if the slave recovers after a day or two, since the slave is their property."
You can beat your slaves in the biblically approved way so long as they don't die within a couple days. Let's not ignore that it also implicitly assumes that people being property is just naturally fine and normal.

Do you say the same thing about evangelicals who use scripture quotes without context to defend their stances too. I don't like Mayor Pete, but he is right for going after the hypocrisy of the right wing evangelicals.
He absolutely DID NOT go after other evangelicals. What in the world makes you think that?
Leaving aside the sheer ridiculousness, Mayor Pete should brush up on his Bible studies, and on his economics, before running for POTUS. In the first place, Judeo-Christian thought generally references charitable behavior as being voluntary--from the heart.
The taxes etc in ancient Israel were anything but voluntary. They had military, holy temples, public works etc to finance.
Of course in this country politicians use the Bible all the time to support their arguments. Both sides quote it to argue whether Jesus was liberal or conservative, and they typically make fools of themselves.
Left unexplained by Mr. Buttigieg is exactly why he thinks his personal theology should constitute a cornerstone of public policy.
Separation of church and state and all that, don'cha know?
Besides...Mr. Buttigieg apparently considers himself at liberty to ignore any number of other Biblical injunctions, at his pleasure. One is left to wonder why this particular Biblical passage garners his support.
When you take low grade raw materials and turn them into high value added manufactured products, a company can afford to pay its workers a decent wage or salary.
Flipping hamburgers or gutting chicken carcasses does not add much value and so those companies can't afford to pay high wages.

The kind of slavery we had in US was considered evil even in times of Moses. Israelis has different kind of slaves aka bond servants who agreed to work for free to pay off a debt.
"Whoever steals a man and sells him, and anyone found in possession of him, shall be put to death."

Nope, those restrictions only applied to Isrealites. Other Cultures were open season for chattel slavery.
