Why should the cops just simply let him go to his house and arrest him later? For starters, the guy could just decide to bail and leave the state knowing he's likely to be arrested later.
Another situation where not complying (assuming as more details come out) leads to this.
Look I'm on the side of complying in all circumstances. As always, if he just did what he was instructed to do, he would be alive and home with his kids.
But if he did simply get back into the car and there was no threat of violence, I'm not sure someone being killed is the only alternative.

Bingo. I would hope his full criminal history is published shortly. That will give us a better understanding of what letting "Opie Taylor (per the liberals)" run away would have meant to law-abiding citizens.
