It is frankly bizarre the way American progressives often defend the ultra-right wing, radical Islamist Iranian regime. Khomeini had tens of thousands of liberals and leftists imprisoned, tortured, and killed. In addition to gays, women, religious minorities, and anyone who disagrees with them at all. They execute way more people per capita than country. In addition to amputating arms, gouging out eyes, and other horrible tortures.

Does anyone have a rational explanation for the attitude of the left? Anyone who loves the silent UN care to comment?

There's probably less than you are led to believe. What kind of defense and support are you referring to? The attitude of voters or the elites? Your answer will be different for each.

I wonder what crimes they committed? I know there was a blinding sentence for a man who poured acid on a young girl's face. Presumably it's from the Sharia's "eye for an eye" punishment.

I hope that these barbaric, false religious leaders spend eternity wandering around hell, blind and handless.

I don't have a problem with this. It's their country and culture and laws. As long as they are not being unfairly tried, then so be it.

After all, we have the death penalty in this country. (Which I support)

Suspect overdoses, car jacking, retail theft, smash & grab, armed robberies and mass shootings of random people are very rare in Iran.

Islam is desperately in need of reformation. Christianity went through it sometime after the Spanish Inquisition. Christianity modernized and dropped the vengefulness. Islam desperately needs to crawl out of the 10th Century.

Exactly. Islamic scholars need to take a good hard look at Muhammad's transition from love and tolerance to anger and hate and weed out the garbage. His teachings from his early days in Mecca should be kept and the angry hateful ideas from his later time in Medina should be jettisoned. He lost his way and became an *****h0le and they need to come up with some way to spin his arc as that of a prophet who taught a good path and then tested his disciples by preaching evil to see which ones were righteous enough to discern the difference. Yeah that's it. The whole thing's been a big thousand year test and we finally passed! Yay! Sorry for all chopped off arms, gays dropped from rooftops and that whole late unpleasantness with the caliphate ... but let's not quibble and bicker about who massacred who. We're all grown up now.

I once read that Islam was not successful until it was forced upon people and the people doing the forcing were promised the land, women and children (to takes as slaves) of the "infidels" they forced it upon.

It's the eye-for-an-eye punishment.
Quote:
Iranian courts have sentenced three people to be blinded in one eye under the Islamic republic's retribution laws, a newspaper reported Tuesday.

Hamshahri, the Tehran municipality's daily, said a woman was among the three sentenced to the eye-for-an-eye punishment.

She had hurled acid at another woman in a 2011 dispute, causing her to lose an eye, it said.

Hamshahri said the supreme court has upheld the sentence of having her right eye gouged out, on top of a jail term and a fine.

A man has been handed down the same punishment for causing his victim to lose an eye in a knife assault in 2017.

In a third case, dating back to 2018, a man has been convicted for blinding a friend in the left eye with a hunting weapon. Hamshahri said the plaintiff has "insisted" that his assailant suffer the same fate.
