If nothing else, a dress code is good for our appearance with foreign nations. It means we take governance of the nation seriously, even if it doesn't always feel that way. Senators dressed like slobs wouldn't impress anybody.
But I do think they should have allowances for cultural attire on certain occasions.
You get a job in one of the most prestigious bodies in USA you pull up your big boy pants and get a decent suit. It isn't as if Fetterman can't afford it.
No one is saying Fetterman has to go with Armani, YSL or even Saville Row custom tailored. Just hit the male equivalent of big and stout shop and get something off rack. There is always option of having local dry cleaner/tailor of making alterations if needed or wanted.
>>> I'm thinking back to " My Cousin Vinny" when he had to wear a suit in court and when it got muddy he wore a magician's suit which the Judge did not like. Or Rodeny Dangerfield's " Tall and Fat" mens clothing chain from " "Back To School".
His parents could buy several nice suits for him.
I don't. I feel at least some decorum is in order.
I agree. I'm not sure that coat and tie should be mandatory, but shorts and a hoodie definitely not. Business casual would be OK by me, but that's hard to define.
Decorum also extends to behavior. No use of foul language, shouting over others when they have the floor or otherwise turning the Senate chamber into a circus.
Not looking like a slob isn’t partisan chow. I’m quite liberal, but I appreciated it when I was stationed in Europe and no man over 12 would be seen in public without a collared shirt, leather shoes, a belt, and clean well pressed clothes all around. On the plane ride back to America after years abroad the US passengers seriously looked like homeless people to me. For months when I was back, I was thinking - would it kill you to wash and iron your clothes?
Re bolded, I agree, it's just in the politcal world people just seem to circle the wagons, logic be damned.
