WASHINGTON — Almost seven out of every 10 U.S. troops are either overweight or obese, according to a new report, which also warns the growing trend could compromise military readiness and undermine national security.

The American Security Project, a Washington-based nonprofit organization that studies modern national security issues, conducted the study and found 68% of active-duty service members fall somewhere between overweight and obese on the body mass index, which is a long-used but controversial method of assessing a person’s body classification by height and weight. A person between 25 and 30 on the BMI is considered clinically overweight and more than 30 is considered obese, according to the National Institutes of Health.

Wow. Between gender studies and pizza parties, no wonder our enemies have taken action against America’s interests and allies.

The commander in chief needs to step up.

What happened to our Military standard physical tests?

I mean just by the nature of them if you can pass those you pretty much are Not going to be unhealthily obese.

They must have changed them to be more 'equitable to " differently Bodied".

But be that as it may, how fit do you need to be to launch bombs or remote pilot drones and soon to be Armed drones . Maybe those Quest VR couch potatoes are like savants we can tap, heh.

They gained weight during Covid, just like many other Americans.

IIRC, a big percentage of kids were too overweight to enlist years ago.

Sounds like some military leadership also need to get off their butts and do some training.

The only good thing about this obesity epidemic is that the jack booted thugs are less capable of oppressing us.

Yes you have some fatties…But for 80% give them 60 days of intensive PT and the ooz will melt away. No doubt 25-30lbs would melt during that timeframe.

I actually work on a base, so I see thousands of airmen and soldiers each day. Just going by the “eye test” the vast majority of people do not look overweight.

BMI calculations are pretty strict. For example, you can be a 5’10” 175 pound guy, and according to BMI, you are overweight. Would that guy look overweight? No.

As for me, I consider myself kind of on the thin side. I’m 5’10”, 150 pounds. It’s says I am normal weight.

So I wonder if this article isn’t blowing things out of proportion?

One note is that I rarely ever see, or work with, sailors. So maybe the Navy is the service that is most affected by overweight people?
