Vladimir Putin… “If Ukraine joins NATO, you won’t even have time to blink your eye when you execute Article 5" (Congress, support)

He did not imply Russia would nuke the west first. Just that if Ukraine was given entry into NATO, that would not deter Russia from attacking it, forcing NATO nations to invoke article 5, which would then put NATO troops in direct conflict with Russian ones, and one where inevitably nukes would be used.
This could all be avoided if western countries respect Putin's demands of a NATO free Ukraine. If they ignore his wishes, then their all taking a risk.
Putin won’t attack NATO if Ukraine joins. Just like Finland. But NATO isn’t going to admit a country in an active war with Russia, so it doesn’t matter. If there is anything left of Ukraine after this war then maybe it will join, though I’d personally oppose that.
Yep, no way Ukraine joins NATO while it's at war with Russia that would be nuts. I don't see them joining Nato period as that would be Putin's red lie he's a psychopath who knows what Putin is capable of. I mean no one thought he would do a full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
No surprise there and, frankly, I can't say I necessarily blame Russia or Putin for its position. We took a hardliner stance that basically threatened nuclear armageddon against the Soviets when they had nuclear weapons positioned in Cuba, a relatively small island nation down in the Caribbean and almost got us in a war with the French back during the ACW because of circumstances involving Mexico that's eerily reminiscent to Ukraine's current predicament.
Mind you, this was all forecast over a decade ago by a former CIA figurehead. Ukraine is basically a red line for Russia. If anyone thinks America has the high ground here, then you need only look at our policies when it comes to foreign powers and their involvement in Latin America, particularly with the two aforesaid incidents above.
It's a pretty dangerous game you are playing. Figure the payoffs. If you're right, we let a mostly destroyed country into our club. If you are wrong? Armagedón. Would you play those odds in Vegas?
There's usually some sort of menacing threat, but any use of nuclear weapons by Russia would be the end of Russia itself, and Putin and his cronies are not that stupid.
Really. They say such stupid stuff. Some of them even make Biden look smart.
I guess he's killed off any good people and Putin is surrounded by nutjobs.

But Putin does have survival instincts.
The Russians don't want a nuclear war any more than we do, so I would take their threats with a pinch of salt.
Putin is a clever and shrewd character, make no mistake about that, indeed he has to be to survive as Russian leader, as Russia has a long history of political assassinations and poisonings.
Stalin himself died in mysterious circumstances, although the fact that his paranoia had led to the best Jewish doctors being purged and sent to Siberia, meant that the best doctors were not able to treat him when he grew ill, which is I suppose poetic justice.
Putin will want to make his mark on history, in fact he's obsessed with often dubious historical narratives, but in the end he wants to go down in history, and that's not going to happen if he destroys the entire planet and everyone on it.

Putin is an old man and he won't mind going out with a bang. A really big bang. He is more interested in destroying us than to save Russia. He is more interested in glory than survival. He could make Hitler look like a boy scout with his pants down.
It will not happen. Putin is bluffing. More Russian disinformation.
He is not bluffing and he would absolutely do it. Let's not push Russia into a corner. They're winning, and Ukraine is not worth it for us.

You people are delusional. It's 54 countries against 1 and they still have the upper hand. NATO can never defeat Russia in Eastern Europe, it was designed with defense in mind, not offense. Macron is overestimating his capabilities by a lot. Europe's ammo stock are almost empty and they have just 2 weeks worth of it. What would they go to war with ? Rocks ?
Russia is the #1 nuclear power in the world and they don't have a doctrine of no first use. They will never allow Ukraine to become a part of NATO just like the US would never allow Canada to form an alliance with Russia and host hostile military bases.

As for being an old man, Putin's a spring chicken compared to some of the current crop of US politicians and Judges.
There were constant threats from both sides during the Cold War years, and Russia and Putin has no real appetite to see Mother Russia destroyed any more than the West does in relation to their respective countries.
As for Ukraine joining NATO it's far from a done deal, and it just takes someone like Trump to veto it, and that would be the end of the Ukrainian hopes of joining in the foreseeable future.
