I had ancestors fight on both sides of that conflict. Having said that I don't have a problem with those ancestors who fought for it.

Read the declarations of secession. >95% of the text openly endorses slavery and labels it as the primary justification for forming the Confederacy. It also "accuses" the North of promoting racial equality and "negro freedom". It reads worse than the Mein Kampf.
I've pointed this out too in one of my posts. No one listened. In fact, I actually have excerpts of the Articles of Secession written out on this thread. One reason the Confederate flag does not represent Southern pride for me.

That is basically what the Civil War was. It was a rich man's war but poor White people were the main one's fighting that war. The elites and slave owners felt like the end of slavery would end their way of life, their economy. They tried to get poor White people to fight their war by convincing them that the slaves would cause trouble for them, and that the federal government was after them. In those days, regionalism and state loyalties reigned over national loyalty, so it was quite easy to get people to fight.
