That is basically what the Civil War was. It was a rich man's war but poor White people were the main one's fighting that war. The elites and slave owners felt like the end of slavery would end their way of life, their economy. They tried to get poor White people to fight their war by convincing them that the slaves would cause trouble for them, and that the federal government was after them. In those days, regionalism and state loyalties reigned over national loyalty, so it was quite easy to get people to fight.
