KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Tommy DeFoe wore his Southern pride on his Confederate flag belt buckle Wednesday as he argued in federal court that a school dress code banning such items violated his free speech rights.
"I am fighting for my heritage and my rights as a Southerner and an American," said the lanky DeFoe, 18, during a break in his trial.
DeFoe says his great-great uncle served in the Confederate army and "died for the South" in the Civil War.
Another "Free Speech" issue, or Confederate pride in the traditions of the Ol' South?

If the school has a dress code, he should abide by it or get schooled elsewhere.

Another BS lawsuit.

What is wrong with challanging the dress code? One of the great things about the USA is that we have a right to challange what we dont agree with.

Sure, and they have a right to send you home if you're in violation of it.

He's 18...he ought to know better by now. Schools are not the only places with dress codes and it isn't a violation of his rights....geesh. Let's see him try to get any kind of professional job wearing that shirt, or even work at Target or Walmart...they have dress codes too. He's 18, it's time to grow up and join the real world.

Just a question. How does wearing the flag of a foreign country (the Confederate States of America) with totally different values from the US, show someone's US Heritage? I am not disputing that his grandparents may have been part of the civil war, but the Confederacy was vanquished.

Of course, but you can still challange and sometimes win.
Students and parents at our local schools did so.

I don't have a problem with it being challenged. However, as long as it's the current rule, expect to be sent home if you violate it. You can also challenge it without initially breaking it.

He has to do what the school tells him to do as far as what he is wearing. However I have another question. I know its not everyone in the southern USA, but it is a large number that give the impression and need to make a decision. The decision is are you a southerner or are you an american from the southern USA. I say this because there seems to be some difference of opinion of the true meaning to the defintion of the word. Actually it seems to be getting more and more pronounced as we go thru time now. Personally I feel that someday in our history the southern USA or some of its states will decide not to be part of the USA.
