You mean someone who is born into a family with little resources, in an area that has poor schools and little opportunity for advancement, "chooses" that position? I guess that person just didn't choose to be rich instead, huh?
Poors chose to be poors because they choose not to love Jesus hard enough. If you really love Jesus you tell everyone you see every waking second and you don't talk about anything else, and then you'll be rich both financially and in spirit.
even if every single american had a phd, there would still be a hundred million doing the menial work that has to be done, and being paid menial wages to do it. Each aggressive person can move up the ladder, and push another one down to replace him on the lower rung, but that will never change the fact that there will always be a need for people to do low-skill work, and no matter how smart or educated of diligent or skilled they are, they will still do the low-skill jobs and they will never be paid enough to consme all we create and dangle tantalizingly in front of their noses. And they will always be looked at by the rest of as second class citizens, who were too lazy to become brain surgeons.
I am sure most of the poor do not want to be but cannot find a way to escape poverty. But they are not the topic of this thread. There are diverse reasons why some people choose poverty. Many for religious reasons, take a vow of poverty. Some feel it is selling their souls to work for some company. Some do low-wage work for a charitable cause. I know a few who have a moral objection to paying taxes for war, so they make sure never to earn enough to pay Federal Income Tax. Some are so in love with some region that has no decent paying jobs they stay. And finally, cost-of-living varies tremendously throughout the country. What you may think is poverty level where you live might be a comfortable living somewhere else.

I don't think the question is "why are some people poor by choice" I think the question is "why do people who don't want to be poor not choose to do something about it"
I have always wondered this myself. we all know that poverty is a choice, so why do so many chose to live in it? with all the government grants, educational opportunities, and other government programs out there, why do so many choose to do so little? show me a poor person, and I will show you a reason. unless you are physically or mentally disabled, there is no excuse for being poor.
I bet you that I could cut your expenses in half. I would bet that you carry a lot of debt, have several cell phones, cable, you obviously have internet. see, people are suffering from the entitlement disease.

I don't subscribe to the shibboleth that anyone can escape poverty, I agree that, in a land where money buys almost everything (including political influence) it is hard to imagine anyone choosing to be poor. I gave some reasons.
