Are you referring to the $335 for herpes specifically?
I haven't verified that its in there - its a quote from another poster.

But even if the money in this theoretical case went primarily for supplies or building labs - doesn't that also employ people (building the lab, delivering the supplies, etc)?

  • $1 Billion for Amtrak (the federal railroad that hasn’t made a profit in 40 years)
  • $650 Million to pay for digital TV conversion coupons (on top of the billions already doled out)
  • $600 Million for the federal government to buy new cars
  • $150 Million for The Smithsonian
  • $20 Million for new sod at the National Mall
  • $4.5 Billion for Federal management/oversight of the funds (money needed to monitor the money)
  • $2.1 Billion for Offices of Inspector General for management/oversight of funds (more money needed to monitor the money)
  • $25 Million for salaries and expenses for the Government Accountability Office for oversight activities relating to this Act (money to pay the people using the money to monitor the money)
  • $50 Million for watershed rehabilitation by the Natural Resources Conservation Service (is this an emergency?)
  • $1 Billion for Periodic Censuses and Program by the Bureau of the Census (why does the census bureau need a stimulus, they’re already part of the budget?!)
  • $350 Million for salaries and expenses for National Telecommunications and Information Administration (gotta pay the guys that tap our phones and read our emails.)
  • $100 Million for NIST Scientific and Technical Research and Services (these are the guys who can’t recognize a controlled demolition when it’s right in their face)
  • $100 Million for NIST Industrial Technology Services (more for them)
  • $300 Million for construction of NIST research facilities (still more?? Again, is this really an emergency?)
  • $400 Million for habitat restoration and mitigation activities by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (emergency?)
  • $600 Million for accelerating satellite development and acquisition, acquiring climate sensors and climate modeling capacity and establishing climate data records by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (emergency? jobs?)
  • $400 Million for science by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (emergency funding for NASA?)
  • $50 Million for cross-agency support by NASA ($50 million for other agencies to talk to NASA? Haven’t they heard of e-mail?)
  • $2.5 Billion for research and related activities by the National Science Foundation (emergency? jobs?)
  • $100 Million for education and human resources for the National Science Foundation (emergency? jobs?)
  • $400 Million for major research equipment and facilities construction by the National Science Foundation (wow, they really made out nicely!)
  • $4.5 Billion for improvement, repair and modernization of Department of Defense facilities, restore and modernize Army barracks and invest in the energy efficiency of DOD facilities (apparently over half the federal budget isn’t enough for these guys.)
  • $350 Million for DOD energy research and development (they need a lot of money to research how to kill people.)
  • $2.4 Billion to demonstrate carbon capture and sequestration technologies by the Department of Energy (that much just to “demonstrate” a technology? How many jobs is this going to create, really?)
  • $500 Million for Defense Environmental Cleanup (stop dropping depleted uranium and you won’t need this.)
  • $200 Million for FEMA emergency food and shelter programs (yay, more FEMA prison camps!)
  • $500 Million for Bureau of Indian Affairs construction (is this an emergency?)
  • $800 Million for EPA Hazardous Substance Superfund Remedial program (is this an emergency?)
  • $200 Million for EPA Leaking Underground Storage Tank Trust Fund Program (I wish this were a joke.)
  • $550 Million for Indian Health Service facilities (is this an emergency?)
  • $3 Billion to establish a Prevention and Wellness Fund (the Era of Personal Responsibility means having the government tell you how to be healthy, and we need yet another federal agency to do this.)
  • $6.0 Billion for DOD Military Construction (MORE for the military?)
  • $500 Million for Native American Housing Block Grants (emergency?)
  • …and the pork goes on, I hope by now you get the picture.

Your beliefs about FDR are a myth! Judging by how often they are repeated the Heritage Foundation is doing a good job!

Keynesian economics is what was put into play during the Great Depression! The reason we don't follow it today is because we have bought in to false beliefs about economics! The Heritage Foundation has worked hard to discredit Keynesian economics! I believe because they don't like The New Deal programs like social security and have a belief the best way to rid ourselves of these projects! The truth is only the keynesians have answers to why the market reacts the way it did to the tightening restrictions in Europe and the the Reagan Tax-cuts! Other economic theories have no answers to why the markets responded the way they did!

My source was congressman Ron Paul who provided details of wasteful spending.

Hans-Hermann Hoppe, professor of economics at UNLV has an excellent essay debunking Keynesian economic theory published yesterday for the Mises institute.

Ok! you believe a different economic theory! I can respect that! Unfortunately the classic economic theory has been making that claim for a long time but has failed to provide answers to the European markets reaction in the 70s and the American markets reaction to Reaganomics in the 80s! The only economic theory that has properly explained both is the Keynes theory!

Thank LaMexican, The respect is mutual! I still hold out hope that the democrats and Obama can turn around the economy. It will be hard with the mess that the Gop left him, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes right now.
A part of me feels that many economists at the moment are exaggerating how bad things will get, all for the glory of getting their names in print or on-air. My gut feels that we may be close to hitting the bottom, if we haven't hit it already. I think this spring a lot will depend on how people are managing their debt loads. The markets in nominal terms could go up.

It's good that someone pays attention to these people. Even whackjobs come up with a good idea every now and then, and if no one were listening, we'd miss out on those.

Ron Paul's wasteful spending list is an example of a new theory -- already seen in action many times in recent C-D stimulus threads -- that all spending is actually pork. It makes no difference at all what the money is actually being spent on...when you get down to the project details, it's all pork, pork, pork, and more pork.

Unless of course there is some portion that is to be spent in the public sector...then it's waste. Everyone knows that the government was stupid and negligent for not setting up any sort of oversight or accounting over the first $350 billion TARP tranche. B-u-u-u-u-t, at the same time, everyone also knows that money to establish oversight and accouting over the $850 billion stimulus bill is an example of waste. Brillliant, guys...I love the consistency.

And there is apparently a secret formula for determining whether something will provide stimulus or not. The formula is known only to right-wingers, and they use it all the time to declare that there is no stimulus to be found anywhere in that $850 billion, but they refuse to tell anyone else what the formula actually is. To an independent observer, this might look like some sort of appeal to the Theory of Empty Claims, but we're assured that no, there really is such a formula, it's solid as a rock, and it conclusively proves that there is no stimulus in the current stimulus package.

Then there's the also secret yardstick that determines whether a stimulus package will "work" or not. You can use this yardstick to prove that the current House stimulus bill will "not work", while the Republican alternative -- consisting principally of assistance targeted to mega-corporations and the idle rich -- will "work". We are not allowed to see the yardstick either, so there will be no investigation into how that itself "works", but there will be many more pronouncements to be sure over the conclusive results that it also produces.

Oh, and by the way, the Mises Institute is a storefront propaganda operation supported by hard-right corporate mega-money. Think Scaife, Coors, Bradley, Walton, et al. There are fewer than 100 people included in their so-called Austrian School. By comparison, there are more than 20,000 members of the American Economic Association, the professional group for real, actual economists.

It's fine to criticize the President's plan if you've got a viable alternative. But criticism just for the sake of criticism is absolutely pointless.
There is a "viable alternative"; but, the Damnocrats aren't listening.
